Fit, Form and function..., November 27, 2010
This review is from A.G. Spalding & Bros BRFT180 Fountain Pen - Medium Nib - Translucent White Body
Fit, Form and function are excellent. I was looking for a fountain pen to
convert to eye-dropper style, since I can go through two short cartridges per
day. (I write tons for work.) I had experimented with the solid metal version,
but wanted to see if I could create this one with visible ink reservoir, which
as you can see is ideally suited. I converted the pen by following the
outstanding eyedropper conversion instructions on this site at
http://www.jetpens.com/cms.php/content/Article:_How_to_Do_an_Eye_Dropper_Pen_
Conversion
and simply put O-rings over the threaded ends of both the nib body and blind cap
of the barrel. (O-rings are available here at Jet Pens.) Both are threaded and
are easily removed in a counter clockwise fashion (standard). I used bactracin
ointment instead of slicone grease to seal the threads, because it was readily
available. Once snugged down, leave the nib body alone, and fill from the blind
cap. I used Noodlers Britannia ink. There have been no leaks, but when full
(about five short euro cartridge volumes= huge ink!!, (fill to within 1 cm of
body edge to allow the nib to extend into the body or the ink may overflow when
you screw in the nib end -- found out the hard way :) ) the nib may run a little
wet, and you may get ink buildup on the sleeve in the cap of the pen, that can
get onto the nib body. Adjusting the tines of the nib might help. I ordered a
caligraphy tip, and will be fitting this to test in a follow up review. Note
that the translucent body of the pen is excellent to tell you what color you
have, and how much is left. Thanks Jet Pens!
