Developed in 1933, Clearprint vellum was used in the design of engineering projects like the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, the B-17 Flying Fortress, and the NASA space shuttles. Originally intended to be a drafting tool, it is also loved by artists as a unique substrate for applying a wide range of wet and dry media, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, charcoals, colored pencils, and inks.

  • 8x8 grid (1/8" grid) sheet style.
  • 50 sheets of 1000H 16 lb (60 g) vellum paper per book.
  • Archival, highly durable, and made from 100% cotton.
  • Translucent—great for tracing and layering sheets.
  • Detachable slip sheet that can be used as an opaque backing.
  • Glue binding that allows sheets to be cleanly torn out.
  • Thick cardboard back cover
  • Small brochure of tips and techniques.
  • Designed and made in the USA.

Note: When using dry media, Clearprint recommends applying a fixative spray to finished works to prevent smudging.

I laughed when I unboxed this because it says America four times on the front cover (which is designed to be detached and used as a slip sheet), it has an oddly patriotic introduction on it. But that's just me, a lot of products that make a big point of saying "made in the USA" etc usually do tickle me a bit because that doesn't automatically mean it's a better product, especially when imo the Japanese make the best mechanical pencils (Pentel) and gel pens (Uni) in the world.

That being said, this time it wasn't all hype, this is really great paper. I love the small grid and the fact that the grid is only printed on one side of the sheet so that you have the option of using a side with the crisp lines or the side with the soft lines, as well as eliminating the problem of printing grids on both sides of the paper which often results in a see-through mess because the grids aren't perfectly aligned on top of each other. The thick covers are a plus as well.
