I've been practicing...

I've been practicing gesture drawing and one of my main issues is that I tighten up and always tend to focus on detail instead of the basic lines that make up a gesture. So, I wanted to find something that wrote a bold line, limiting my natural urge to focus on detail, wasn't too expensive, and wasn't as messy as charcoal.

After browsing through the JetPens catalog for a few minutes I discovered this guy, and I'm so glad I did! It met my needs perfectly. It's got a big fat lead that you can sharpen to a point for detail, or in my case, just wear it down and you end up with a thick, bold line perfect for gesture drawing.

The clutch itself is solidly built, no rattling noises or loose parts. It feels great in my hands, the wood provides a nice grip, and it's got a nice weight to it. I had an internal battle about whether to buy the aluminum or wooden clutch, but I definitely feel I made the right decision in going with the wooden one. There's just something so warm and cozy about holding this pencil that I pretty much carry it everywhere.

I highly recommend this product for gesture drawing, and to help you loosen up when sketching. I do regret not purchasing a softer lead to go along with this guy. The HB lead that comes provided is fine, but I like a darker line.

I am a sucker for really fine leads/nibs when it comes to pens and pencils. But at the same time, I love the other end of the spectrum- super large tips! I absolutely love the 5.5 mm lead and I am completely astonished at the precision that it offers. I also bought the small cube sharpener, and I am very glad that I did so! I have already had several people tell me that they want one and they have never seen lead so large. They are just as shocked with the precision of the writing. I'd assume that it is because you can clearly see the entire utensil area that you are using. The length of this holder is fantastic! It is very comfortable to use and I wouldn't change a thing!

I wanted something heavy...

I wanted something heavy and large to sketch with so I could focus on movement and working from the shoulder. This is absolutely perfect! I actually don't really know how I got along without it. I've only had it for a few days, but already I'm seeing an improvement in my work.

The wood gives you a good grip and the heft is just about right. I have smaller hands, so I was a little worried at first, but I've actually found this forces me to keep my hand loose. The weight does all the work, freeing me up to focus on capturing gesture and form. The holder is well balanced, an absolute must for me. Everything feels solid without being bulky. No rattles, no strain on your hands, just a comfortable lead holder.

The holder comes with a single piece of lead to get you started. Because you can retract the lead completely into the barrel, you can take it with you anywhere. As the lead can be sharpened, you can really get some nice detail, a real surprise to me. It won't be fine detail, mind you, but you can still lay in the basics. As it wears, the bolder line does fantastic work laying in reference lines.

I got a sharpener and extra lead to go with this and I'm not sorry. With as much as I've used this over the last few days, I'm going to need it. I am absolutely in love with this lead holder. :)

Love this lead holder. Just got it today and can't put it down. I did have a small issue when i pushed the button at the top it wouldn't push the lead out. I figured out that i had to press a bit harder than usual and then the lead flew out of it. Besides that it is a great item, I was surprised at how fine the lines you can make with this. And the lead is great quality, i'm glad i bought it.
