The American road-tripping spirit lives on in these limited-edition America the Beautiful memo books by Field Notes. The beautiful vast scenery you would see while driving across the country is captured on the covers, which are printed in a nostalgic 1960s style, with over-saturated off-register colors. Each cover represents a lyric from "America the Beautiful"—"Spacious Skies," "Amber Waves," and "Mountain Majesty." The books are bound with shiny copper staples, and the pages inside are Finch "Soft White" paper ruled with blue lines.

Like other Field Notes books, these are durable and flexible, designed to survive any pant or shirt pockets. They are bound with a rugged three-staple saddle-stitch process. Inside the front cover, you can write in your contact information and, with a sense of humor, indicate whether or not the person who returns your lost book will be rewarded. The inside back cover lists "practical" applications for the memo books such as #02, "Best Pies Tasted." The Field Notes story and further specifications are also presented. The books are manufactured and printed in the USA.

As a bonus, this pack includes a bright "America the Beautiful" decal (No. FNC-18a). Stick it on your car window or luggage, just like they did in the 60s.

This pack includes 3 memo books, each containing 48 pages (24 sheets), and a decal.

Memo book dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches (8.9 x 13.9 cm).

I've never bought any Field Notes before, so this was a great introduction to them. I had read before that the limited edition sets have a heavier paper than the normal paper cover ones. I'm not sure how they compare to others, but the paper in this book is certainly thick enough to perform very well with fountain pens. I also love how Field Notes state all of the "specifications" for how the jotter was created, down to the ink type and machine that was used for each component. The pages are a "soft white" which means they are a little creamier than xerox printer paper. The decal that comes with it is a "permanent water transfer" decal, which means that you soak it in water and can apply the front or back of the decal to any hard flat surface; once it dries I assume it would be permanent and not water-soluble. It's very difficult for me to feel convinced to buy pamphlets (e.g. one signature books), being a bookbinder, but I think the Field Notes products possess a lot of qualities that make them worthwhile. Not quite up there for me as Rhodia is, but pretty close! Will definitely buy some limited edition runs from them again.

After much deliberation about the true usefulness of these memo books, I decided to go ahead and get them. I like to keep journals, so they are a bit too small for a "traditional" journal, but who really cares! I love the cover design and the meticulous details inside the cover. Maybe I'm weird, but I think it is interesting to know what machine and what ink was used to print the blue lines on the paper! I will buy these again for sure next time they have another limited edition.
