2B almost perfect! This...

2B almost perfect! This is a really nice dark lead. I love the 2B hardness (or would that be softness?) as it leaves a nice dark line, but is still eraserable. This lead writes smooth (not as smooth as Pentel Stien) with no scratchy areas or skips (I hate soft leads that suddenly have a hard scratchy area). There is some graphite blobs that occur if your shading heavily (pretty typical with a softer lead- but there seemed to be a bit more than usual, not a deal breaker, but just an observation). This lead also wears a bit faster then Pentel or Uni offerings. Where it really shines (or maybe dulls?) is the consistent dark, duller lines. It really is a less shiny (less reflective??) lead. That I like because often times I'm working in direct sunlight and the glare off some leads can make the lines hard to deal with (I use these softer leads in woodworking because they produce an easy to see dark line, and the softer lead is less prone to snap on rough wood). So far there have been no jamming or feed issues when used in my Graphgear 1000. The case the lead comes in is nice. The lid flips over to reveal alomost half the tube- so be carefully when removing leads as you could easily spill half a container. My lid seems a bit loose on the 0.9mm size but not so on the 1.3mm. One other note is that both my containers state made in Korea. Not a big deal to me as the quality is still there, but I know some people may be concerned about where they lead is made. Also note that this is the same review I posted for the 0.9mm size but please note that the 1.3mm size only comes with 16 leads instead of 36. Again typical with larger sizes, but worth being aware that you are getting fewer leads.

This is going to be short. If the company that makes these "leads" doesn't fool around and destroy there current formula, hands down, this the THE BEST 2B (3B, 4B, 5B, 6B) graphite mechanical pencil lead in the world. Smooth, dark, not gritty, not oily, not waxy, no impurities, not overly-expensive. It is just lovely.

Holy goodness. This lead...

Holy goodness. This lead opened my eyes. For years I'd been using the, um, garbage Mead brand 0.5mm and 0.7mm pencils, and I went thought led like it was my job. I press down very firmly on the paper, and it was not conducive to a piece of lead lasting more than a few days, if that. And to write less hard meant a less dark line, so it was harder to read. And worst, it was scratchy! Like, it chipped, wore unevenly, and literally scratched the paper. When I was blind, I knew no better, so it was irrelevant.

And then this lead came into my life.

I wouldn't say "life-changing," but it has really altered the way I take notes. It never breaks. Ever. Like, I've gone through maybe half a package of this in the first seven weeks of classes, and that's a lot of writing. Multiple small 30-page notebooks worth. And not one broken, chipped, or scratchy lead yet. Even with this package bouncing around in my bag (and a single lead in my pencil), nothing has broken yet. Ridiculous.

Writing with this is a beautiful experience. It seems to melt over the page, like solder when it gets heated, easily flowing like a nice pen. Marvelous lead, super smooth. And the lines are dark and non-metallic, like someone else mentioned. Very readable (if anyone could read my handwriting, that is). Even in direct sunlight, it's still there, matte as ever.

I would give this six stars if I could. Maybe seven. I'm about halfway through the semester, so we'll see if I even need another before the turn of the calendar.

REALLY beats the Pentel Brand of 1.3, 2B hardness. Their's is more like a "B" grade lead and is not as consistent in line width. I only bought one pack to try and see if the lead is what I wanted, It was and is. Nice black line, consistent in width. No "skipping" ... as if lead can, but some do. I have nine 1.3 pencils, all 1.3 and will be ordering more of the Kokuyo 1.3. 2B leads to change out all the pencils.
