Any true lover of traditional Japanese / Chinese painting would really enjoy this new line of brush pens from Kuretake.

These quality brush pens distinguish themselves by their ink fragrance. Borneol, Kyara, and Musk are traditional scent additives into sumi-e ink sticks. The smell of ink aids the meditative process of the sumi-e painting as painters grinds the ink sticks against inkstones to make ink.

Now, modern brush pen users can get a taste of the ancient art through these scented Kuretake brush pens. The brush tip comes in medium and fine (for sutra/scripture writing) and is made of man-made hair.

I received this today, and my first impression is great. It has good ink flow so far, plus the spring and dramatic responsive line variation that I love in hair brush pens---felt "brush" tips just can't compare---and for a very reasonable price. It's also waterproof; after its ink had dried for just a few minutes, a thirty-second soak in water didn't budge it at all. As for the scent, it's kind of soapy-spicy; if you sniff the brush head it's pretty sharp, but once it dries on paper it becomes quite subtle. I would definitely recommend this pen, and I look forward to trying the Kyara (Aloeswood) and Musk scents!

PS: I bought the Sutra-Writing pen at the same time, and it isn't actually any finer than this one; it's exactly the same shape and unscented. Both are finer than the hair brush end of the Kuretake #30.

I'm a newbie to brush pens, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I love it. This was my first one with a real hair brush. The hair brush is much more fun to work with than my felt tip brush pen and you can get a really variable line.

I didn't know what borneol smelled like when I ordered it, so I was a bit worried, but the scent is a nice, clean one, and it's not too strong. I don't know if the scent is real or synthetic, but it didn't give me a headache like some synthetic scents do. I wish the fine version came in this scent.
