This ingenious mechanical pencil features two modes: drafting pencil mode and lead guard mode.

In drafting pencil mode, it has a fixed 4 mm guide pipe that makes using templates and straight edges easy while also allowing an unobstructed view of where the pencil tip meets the page. To activate drafting pencil mode, twist the grip section clockwise as far as it will go.

In lead guard mode, the guide pipe becomes a sliding sleeve that retracts with the lead as you write, reinforcing the lead and allowing you to write for extended periods without having to extend the lead beyond the edge of the guide pipe. The edges of the guide pipe are rounded to minimize scratching. To activate lead guard mode, twist the grip counterclockwise as far as it will go.

The Conception also lets you configure how far the lead extends with each click, from 0.2 mm to 2.0 mm. To do so, twist the knurled ring just above the clip and below the push button. Four circular windows in the barrel change color to indicate the current setting.

  • Change between drafting pencil and lead guard modes.
  • Configure amount of lead extended with each click.
  • Brass grip section and aluminum barrel provide good durability, weight, and balance.
  • Subtly textured grip section for improved comfort and control.

A decent enough pencil,...

A decent enough pencil, but not worth the price tag.

The idea of a pencil that switches between drafting mode and retractible lead pipe mode is innovative and exciting, as is the ability to control the length of the lead, but unfortunately in practice it falls short of the theory. Twisting the metal grip to change between writing modes frequently causes jamming in my pencil, and when writing with the retractible lead pipe, the pipe often sticks and requires excessive force or intervention to retract with the shortening lead. As well, the lead pipe will not fully extend with the lead when you have the lead length set to the maximum.

The pencil has a nice weight and durability, and the smooth metal is nice to hold, but the grip edges can be bothersome. If you're looking for something with a retractible lead pipe feature, I'd recommend the Pentel Orenz instead.
