I am a pencil lead fanatic and have tried all the lead on the hardness scale. In my opinion, 3B provides the perfect balance of dark lines, smooth writing and hardness. 4B smudges a bit too much and 2B is a bit too light and doesn't write smoothly enough. 3B can still smudge but only a small amount. 4B smudges a bit more than I liked (although I loved writing with it.)

3B will be my lead of choice from here on.

I liked how dark this wrote, but I guess I have a pretty heavy hand because I kept breaking it. Had to change to HB. The HB hardly breaks. Was using it in Rotring 600.

Yay! The softest leads for technical pencils that I have found in a 0.5mm size (until now) has been a 2B, but these 3Bs are available and they are amazing! Not as weak and breakable as other soft leads and very dependable too.

Smooth, dark but kind of soft for writing. 2B is much better.
