I am a pencil lead fanatic and have tried all the lead on the hardness scale. In my opinion, 3B provides the perfect balance of dark lines, smooth writing and hardness. 4B smudges a bit too much and 2B is a bit too light and doesn't write smoothly enough. 3B can still smudge but only a small amount. 4B smudges a bit more than I liked (although I loved writing with it.)

3B will be my lead of choice from here on.

Yay! The softest leads for technical pencils that I have found in a 0.5mm size (until now) has been a 2B, but these 3Bs are available and they are amazing! Not as weak and breakable as other soft leads and very dependable too.

I had to come back to update my review. This lead is soft, really soft, but I love, love, love it! I put one stick in my Kuru Toga pencil to see how long it would last ... four days using it every day, for about 1-2 hours a day. I'm upgrading my mechanical pencil, but I wrote for four hours this afternoon, and this lead never broke. I had to extend it often in the Kuru Toga especially when I got close to the end of the stick, it (lead) kept retracting back up into the Kuru Toga. I ordered at Rotting, now I'm going to test this lead in that pencil ... this is my favorite lead!

You do not have to apply a lot of pressure with this lead because its a nice deep lead when used in my Kuru Toga Standard mechanical pencil ... BUT ... it smears like crazy! Maybe its the paper I am using? I wrote out two pages of notes in class using my Kuru Toga so I could erase, re-write, etc. The next day I was going over my notes and put my right hand on one side of the page to hold it down, not with a lot of pressure, I shifted to answer the telephone with my left and my right slide down that side of the page. Thankfully the lead is dark, but the smear is madness to the highest power. I immediately went over my two pages of notes with ink, but the white paper is now gray, literally. Crazy, I like it! I want darker lead now ... madness, I know right.

Good pencil lead. Little less smudgy and less prone to breakage than what I had previously, but nothing magical.

I liked how dark this wrote, but I guess I have a pretty heavy hand because I kept breaking it. Had to change to HB. The HB hardly breaks. Was using it in Rotring 600.
