March 15, 2011
Been using one of these for about 4 years now, purchased to replace a Pentel 207, and have been mostly happy with it. The retraction/clip mechanism was novel to me, but now seems useful in terms of making dual purpose of two already-existing items (the lead advance also extends the guide pipe ; the clip acts as the lock mechanism, and then releases the guide pipe to retract - solid spring action).

The lead hardness indicator requires partial disassembly of the body to adjust & then some practice/patience to get the body screwed back together without the setting moving out of place.

A friend was mentioning another pencil on this site and I responded by comparing the Graphgear 1000 in 0.7mm to a favorite book. Do you have a favorite book? A book you reread, that reliably gives you a special experience every time? The Graphgear 1000 (in 0.7mm) is, for me, the pencil version of that favorite book. I have been using it now for years. Years! And I still love to pick it up. I adore this pencil. This pencil should have design awards. It should have a statue somewhere with a dedication placard that waxes eloquent about its beauty, functionality and the feelings of joy it brings to those lucky enough to use it. But perhaps I do not make myself clear: I love this pencil.

I really like this pencil. It's a tad thin for my taste but otherwise performs great. The clip is a great feature and has helped keep me from losing the pencil a few times.

It would be perfect if it didn't have the rubber dots on the grip. Over time rubber becomes sticky specially If you live in a high humidity area. The grip of the pentel graph gear 500 would be enough,

a popular pencil. personal thing only, but i'd prefer the color to be something other than the light blue, and i understand they are color coded by the lead size. the clip is nice if you clip it to something 'thick', and the retraction works well.

It's a tad too heavy, but it's nothing the appearance doesn't make up for – it's just so damn good looking. The head shoots back into the body very hard, and I hope it doesn't damage the mechanism in the long run.

Quite possibly this is the best-looking mechanical pencil of my collection with the performance to match. The cool blue ruber grip dots make a nice contrast with the metal barrel that would not be out-of-place in a sci-fi show. Normally I prefer 0.5 mm mechanical pencils, but gave this one a try since the other sizes were sold out. Its comfortable grip allows such precise control that one can render really fine lines even with a 2B lead on smooth drawing paper (which by the way does not smudge as badly as a rougher surface paper like bristol with a vellum fisnih might). Very satisfying retractable point mechanism.
