DescriptionSpecificationsFrequently Asked Questions
Your first encounter with a fountain pen is important. That's why Pilot designed the Kakuno pen, a simple fountain pen that is great for beginners. Thanks to its many features that help ease beginners into the world of fountain pens, kids and adults can experience the joy of writing with these delightful instruments. "Kakuno" means "to write" in Japanese, and that's just what this pen helps you do!

Features include the cute smiley face on the nib that always faces up when writing, ensuring correct nib orientation. The "Soft" color pens have a winking smiley face, while the other colors have a regular smiley face. Indentations in the cap make it easy to grasp when uncapping the pen. The cap and body are hexagonal, similar to the classic wooden pencil, so that the pen is comfortable to hold and doesn't roll away. The grip is made in a triangular shape so that fingers naturally sit in the correct position. Novices will soon be on their way to becoming seasoned fountain pen users!

One black ink cartridge is included. This pen is compatible with Pilot ink cartridges and converters, as listed under Recommended Refills/Parts.

Just received the pen. The grip is good. The medium nib is like a fine nib. Not smooth to write. The platinum preppy is writing better for me. Go with platinum preppy or pelican junior for smooth writing.

I ordered this pen for my daughter (she raves about them, and seems to be collecting all the colors). When it arrived, she was at camp, so I inked it up and used it as a desk pen for a week. Wow. The way the medium nib writes is absolutely outstanding for the price. It's very similar the Metropolitan in that it always starts immediately, never skips, and is amazingly smooth. On top of that, the grip section is a little bigger than the Metros, making this pen more comfortable for me to write with. OK, as a middle aged guy, I won't be whipping a Kakuno out at a board meeting. The lack of a clip means I won't be carrying one around in my shirt pocket, but I don't think that's an issue for their target audience here. I am going to get myself one to carry in my briefcase to use at my desk and at home.

Really enjoying this pen. In fact, I prefer it over the Lamy Safari. I plan to get another color of this pen. I prefer thicker lines pen, but this pen felt just right and wrote really well-especially for a thin line pen. Really impress!

A high-value product.
Nib is smooth, the flow is consistent, no skipping. The clear barrels helps in checking the ink amount. I prefer this pen to the Lamy Safari, because of its smaller size, lighter weight, and a round grip. I expected the medium nib to be a bit finer though. The nib is on par with the Safari.
Cons: no clip, body still a bit too big for me, the converter holds at best a barely adequate amount of ink. But considering the price, 5 star definitely. It's way cheaper than the ever-popular Lamy.
