Luxury cars often have...

Luxury cars often have wood inlays to give the impression (or illusion) of luxury. So too with the Pilot S20. But for the S20, that luxury is also functional—it provides a nice smooth grip (people who prefer a textured grip, however, will be less pleased). If one is going to indulge, this amount for a pencil makes a lot more sense than 50 thou and up for a car.

The pencil writes well enough. I haven’t had it long enough to ascertain its durability. The one small drawback is that the cap doesn’t slide off easily to use the eraser or refill leads—but I guess that’s better than the risk of a loose fitting cap falling off and getting lost.

This pencil is the perfect...

This pencil is the perfect blend of the nostalgic feeling of wooden pencils and the modernity and convenience of a mechanical pencil. The wooden body is a far cry from the usual, plastic, and sometimes overly bright bodies of other pencils. However, there is one flaw about this otherwise perfect pencil: be wary of the tip. I managed to bend mine out of shape after dropping it from about 4 feet. And since there was no replacement tips available, I had to reshape it using brute force. Overall, a stunning pencil for those who cannot seem to part ways with wooden pencils, but could use an upgrade.

Mine came with a bent tip but I used pliers to bend it back to normal, not sure if it's affected my drawing but I'm overall satisfied with this fine mix of technical and organic design.

My new Go To Pencil. Out of all my mechanical pencils (& I have quite a few) this has quickly become my primary tool. If you appreciate good mechanical pencils like me, enough to have a collection of them, that says it all. Listed as a drafting pencil it is very comfortable for writing also. If you just need a pencil, there are less expensive ones that will do the job. This one does it with comfort, quality, & class.

a blend of nature and...
April 23, 2009
a blend of nature and mechanics. this is just what i was looking for. I've purchased quite a few mechanical pencils, some for pure collecting reasons, or just because they looked so darn cool, but most importantly, trying to find a pencil that would feel comfortable in my hand. this one is pretty darn close. my go to pencil has always been the pilot s3, great, but all plastic and just a little too light weight for my hand. The grip on the s20 was a bit too rough, but this one is just right. comfortable feel of wood against the fingers, not too light and not too heavy. seems solid wood from what i can see, but i havent taken it apart, so i cant be sure. however, since it is wood, it's best to keep it in a dry place. a little moisture would no doubt make the wood warp, puff up, or if its veneer, its sure to peel off, so handle with care just in case. overall a great pencil for use or for your collection. I might have to order one more just for collecting :)
