I have a number of Pilot S series pencils, all S3 or S5. Some of my S3's must be 10 years old or more. The S5s I got more recently from Jetpens. I like them all, the transparent plastic, the slight taper, the ribbed grip the caps, its a great design and while I still like the S3 series, I also appreciate the rubber grip of the S5. In fact the .4mm S5 is one of my most used pencils. Past that I haven't gone - The S10 and S20 seem overdone to me, but no doubt others disagree. Anyway, the Pilot S series, like the Pro-use series, is one where I like the cheaper designs and that's not a bad thing.

I've typed a review about this pencil before, but I've changed my mind. I recently bought the Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro (0.5) and I can consider this pencil as a nice drawing/drafting pencil and also a writing utensil. The Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro did not have a good of a grip as the Pilot S5. Even though the Pentel was metal, looks a little bit better, and also has a better lead indicator, the Pilot S5 is better because of the grip and the writing. The Pentel's 1000 wrote darker and holds the lead strongly for drafting and the lead indicator is better because unlike the Pilot S5, the lead indicator is not loose. I like the S5 because it's comfortable and it's great for writing and drawing. Also the S5 feels very ergonomic because of the middle of the pencil which gets bigger too smaller. When writing/drawing with the Pilot S5, I can feel how strong the lead is held in the mechanism and it still writes smoothly.

Definitely a drafting pencil. You can tell it holds the lead very well so it doesn't break. You have to get used to holding the pencil a little higher because at the end of the grip the metal flares around and it will bother you when writing or drawing. When writing it writes very smooth and darker than 0.5 and it gives the perfect amount of lead depending on if you click the pen a little bit or a a lot, you get to choose how much lead you want. The lead indicator is not that great, hard to use or mine is just busted, but I have no use for any other kind of lead but HB. Pencil fits in your hand and looks and feels nice when you're writing/drafting. More of a drafting because the lines are thick. This pencil is not the best. It's ok.

This pencil is not the best and is a little expensive. The body is plastic and there is no grip at all. However, it does work well and is cool to carry around.
