Description

The standard length of a pencil lead is typically around 60 mm. In a conventional pencil, the pencil is only able to clutch the lead core until the last 10 cm. The remaining lead then typically becomes unstable and unusable. This wastes almost 17% of your lead! The Platinum OLEeNU, on the other hand, can clutch a lead core until the very last 0.5 mm! That's an incredibly short piece of lead.

An ordinary pencil's clutch mechanism has an interspace that causes the lead to become weak and unstable.

The OLEeNU clutch mechanism eliminates that gap.

The OLEeNU addresses the issue of lead breakage through the implementation of four major features.

1. OLEeNU Guard
In ordinary mechanical pencils, a gap exists between the mechanism that grasps the lead and the pencil tip, resulting in an unprotected lead piece that is easily broken from pressure or movement. The OLEeNU contains two additional clutch parts (blue and yellow pictured below) that hold the lead to avoid breakage.

2. Internal spring
An internal spring absorbs shock during writing to decrease lead breakage.

3. Sliding metal tip
The tip features a sliding metal sleeve that moves with the lead to give it extra support.

4. "Zero Shin"
Since the clutch of an ordinary mechanical pencil is located a slight distance from the tip, typically around 10-12 mm of lead is left unusable at the end (i.e. lead is too short for the pencil and must be thrown away). The two additional clutch pieces of the OLEeNU allow you to use lead up to 0.5 mm in length.

The advertised mechanism..., November 21, 2012

The advertised mechanism does NOT work as it should. This pencil actually breaks lead more easily than any other I've used. Furthermore, the pencil does not grip lead to the last little bit; it allows it to slide out and break off!

To retract the lead guard..., January 23, 2012

This review is from Platinum OLEeNu High Grade Lead Breakage Prevention Mechanical Pencil - 0.5 mm - Gun Metal Body
To retract the lead guard and lead strand into the pencil body, here's what I do:

1. hold the pencil vertically, tip on a hard smoothe surface like a table top, with fingers curled around the pencil body and thumb on the cap
2. apply light continuous downward pressure on the pencil body (as if pushing it into the table surface) and simultaneously depress the cap.

The lead guard retracts slowly into the pencil body as long as I hold the cap depressed and keep pressure on the pencil body. The action is nothing like a retractable (click-open, click-closed) ball pen. To deploy the lead strand for writing, just press the cap again. The online "manual" explains none of this that I saw. The JetPens item photos show both the working and the retracted positions.

My OLEeNu is a pleasure to use. Enjoy yours.

I just received my new pencil and love it! Can anybody tell me if the entine tip should be able to retract when the pencil is not in use? If so....how do you make it retract? (I just didnt want to break it on the first day.....)

Unlike the two-star rater, I did NOT get a dud. However, the pencil doesn't hold on to the last 0.5mm as advertised, but it did hold onto the last 1-2mm. It's certainly better than my old ClearPoints, which only held on to the last 13-14mm (I had around 10 of these).

As for the body, it's pretty solid manufacturing, the eraser has a shiny metal cap, the lead tip retracts, and is overall a pretty good pencil.

It does feel a bit light, and the grip is a bit too stiff, but that's just my preference. It's better (and far more expensive) than my ClearPoints.

Try instead the cheaper (and perhaps more aesthetically pleasant too) versions MOL-200 and MOL-500.
