The color is a bit light, but it is fine. It writes smooth and not scratchy at all. Definitely will be buying more colors of this pen in the future!

Smoooooth on decent paper. Very nice cheap fountain pen. The green ink is perfect: not too dark, not too light.

The fine nib Preppy is one of my all time favorite fountain pens. Do my more expensive Pelikans and Pilots write just a skoosh smoother? Yes. But at under $5, the Preppy is an *astounding* value for the money. These pens just plain work. And when the cap wears out and the barrel cracks (after about 18-24 months of daily use), hell, it was under $5.

Honestly, I am a little bit disappointed by the nib on this pen. It is sketchy about starting up every time. It is like it cannot keep up with consistent writing.

The color is also not as deep as I would like, but it is green, and bright.

If you expect to be able to pick up this pen and begin writing with it without any hassle, you will be very frustrated. I ordered black, green, and red in 03 and black, purple, and red in 05. Both of the black pens work very well and start writing immediately. All of the colored ones suck to be perfectly honest. Even storing them nib down does very little. They will write a few sentences then completely stop. You may or may not be able to get them going again before putting them away in frustration. In addition, both the red and green colors are very washed out. The purple is nice and dark, and the black is a bit grey, but passable. I realize they were cheap. That is exactly how they perform.

This one (Green 03) was the worst of the entire batch. I could never get it to write for more than a few lines at a time. I finally tossed the refill and put a blue one in. I now writes immediately and smooth, but the blue is very washed out as well.

Stick with the black on this one.

Smooth nib, good ink flow. But plastic body cracked on both pens I bought (the body where the nib part screws in and the cap that screws on). I carry them in a pen case in my briefcase, so they should be good. Once cracked, they leak on my hands. I won't buy this type again. I prefer the mini fountain pens I bought on this site; many years later they're still in good shape.

I had trouble getting started as I am using the ink cartridge. Once you get the ink flowing this is a great everyday pen. Great color (at least for me) and I would highly recommend this pen.

The other colors of this pen are far better. I bought the pen in black and pink as well, and the other colors are much better. The green is very wet and lightly colored; I would have preferred a greater saturation of color. I intend to convert this pen into an eyedropper pen once the ink runs out or perhaps before because the ink is so poor.

The pen itself is light and ergonomic, well-balanced in weight distribution, and made of thick plastic with a hexagonal design inside the barrel which seems to reinforce the structure. My only complaint about the construction of the Preppy would be the clip, which is loose and shallow; it doesn't grip my pocket enough to keep itself from falling out.

I just bought this pen and am waiting for it to come in the mail. It usually takes about 1-2 days to get to me and I've ordered many times from jetpens. I read an article saying you can refill platinum preppy fountain pens with regular bottled inks by just adding an o-ring to the threads of the barrel. I am currently in love with the j. herbin and pilot iroshizuku bottled inks and am waiting on my glass pens and the platinum preppy pens to test them out. I am definitely looking forward to receiving these pens in the mail. I only wish bottled inks were cheaper... $22.50 for a bottle of iroshizuku is really taxing my wallet. overall, great buy though!
