DescriptionSpecificationsQuestions & Answers
The treasured spirit of writing is captured in a modern, simple form. Since its launch in 2007, the Preppy fountain pen has enjoyed its reputation as a wonderful fountain pen with real fountain pen writing despite its low price point. It's easy to use, has a cool look, and comes in a variety of colors and nib sizes. The beauty of the sturdy stainless steel nib is brought out by polishing.

The colored pen cap and ink feed match the ink color of the pen. This helps you easily identify the color so you don't accidentally use the wrong one. The nib size is also printed on top of the cap for you to find the desired nib size with ease.

The pen won't dry out even if the cartridge is installed for one year, due to Platinum's "Slip Seal" cap mechanism. You can experience smooth writing from the start. Its sturdy nib and ability to keep refilling will allow you to keep the pen for a long time.

One ink cartridge is included.

This is an inexpensive pen, not a cheap one.
It is well crafted from quality recycled materials and functions according to design as a reliable and efficient graphics tool. Although robust the pen still should be respected in handling and use. Mistreatment will shorten the life and possibly crack the cap if forced. All remarks apply to the medium (0.5 mm), fine (0.3 mm) and extra fine (0.2 mm) nib sizes.
Correspondence and drawing grips (posted) are comfortable and the nib is sturdy but responsive under normal fountain pen pressure. The steel point has a perceptible tactile feedback making writing and drawing a sensual pleasure for the user.
Nonproprietary cartridges are accepted and a pen converter permits bottled inks. Conversion to an eyedropper fill is easy and fast. Available ink supply is always visible through the transparent handle.
Dye-based (Noodler's Heart of Darkness) and pigmented inks (Platinum Carbon Ink) flow well without clogging, skipping or corrosion. A minimal piece-count and no moving parts makes for trouble-free operation. The special construction of the cap ensures that ink will flow quickly even after the capped pen has been unused for days. Naturally this feature prevents the pen from drying out. Each cap has an integral clip strong enough to keep the pen secured in pocket or notebook. Manufacturing tolerances are close so everything fits together tightly with no leakage.
Cursive handwriting is smooth and drawing strokes are crisp and concise even when laid down at speed.

The point size is stamped on the end of the cap. It is more efficient to slip a piece of paper with the size (and ink color) into the space between the cartridge and the end of the transparent handle. This little trick will let you pick up the desired pen at a glance without searching through caps of the same color.

Price and quality of this pen makes it excellent for everyday carry by students, journal writers, artists and anyone who enjoys the fluid line of a fountain pen.

Lovely inexpensive, not cheap, pen. Purchase two, one blue, one black. They write beautifully. PROBLEM: on both pens the cap has cracked so that it no longer has a tight grip on the barrel. Is it possible to get replacement caps? Rating downgraded due to this problem.

Looks like the Platinum...

Looks like the Platinum Preppy 05 M nib Fountain Pen design has been updated a bit since I first reviewed it over a year ago. There have been some changes to the barrel graphics and the feed color. The extra fine 02 nib pen looks completely different with a different font type and more sections of its translucent body painted silver. The nib size is clearly marked on the nib, pen cap, and barrel for easy identification. The "Made in Japan" is more prominently displayed on the new barrels. The Preppy is a pretty easy to use beginner's pen. You just unscrew the barrel, plug the ink cartridge, couple of shakes, wait a couple of minutes for ink to flow into the nib, and it is ready for writing or drawing duties. I tested them first on smooth white card stock while waiting in the ER. I used them with the caps posted on the back of the pen barrel for an optimal balance and more comfortable feel. They all worked smoothly and produced consistent lines without having to put much pressure on the paper surface. The cartridge ink does look a bit lighter than my preferred black Platinum Carbon ink. I have shared these pens with the students in my Art Immersion class (10-14 year old), and they all found them to be smooth drawing tools. At their value price point, it is pretty affordable to get all three Platinum Preppy nib sizes and different ink colors for beginners that want to try fountain pens for the first time without having to make a large investment. They are one of the more cost-effective ways of determining which nib size suits your writing or drawing style best before upgrading to mid-priced pens.Other than the few cosmetic changes already mentioned, the Preppy remains a pretty fuss-free pen. I know you are supposed to flush and clean your pens to prevent clogging, but I never had to with my old one (05 Medium nib). I just simply keep reloading it with black carbon ink and it keeps chugging along fine. I will have to see what happens with the finer nib sizes (02 and 03) after I use up their cartridges. I think I might try reloading the empty cartridges with carbon ink using a syringe.

I wanted to love this pen. As an admirer of extra fine nibs, this one is super extra fine. But I've had two and the caps cracked on both, after less than a week of moderate use, so much so that they would not "click" back onto the pen. And the second time I was being oh so careful when I posted. I have moved the nib to a Platinum Plaisir, and for the most part it works fine in that configuration. So far so good with Noodlers Bay State Blue. The nib and the nib housing is completely compatible/interchangeable with metal body Plaisir and so far no problems with that configuration. Spend a little more, but get the same super fine nib in a body that will last more than a week.

I have been a fan of the fine nib preppy for years and always keep one around. This is the same reliable pen with a smaller line.

The line size on this is very small. I would say smaller even than a Pilot G-2 on 0.38 size.

Did have to adjust it a bit as it wrote very dry out of the package. Could be part of the extremely fine nib.

One of the few fountain pens I have found in this narrow of a line width and cheap enough it won't matter if you lose it or break it.
