The Hex-o-Matic is a solid pencil that competes with the Rotring Rapid Pro and
Rotring 800 at a much lower price point. It is lighter than the Rapid Pro,
which is my only complaint on the Rapid Pro. It is about the same weight as the
800. The knurling is a nice balance between "sharp" and smooth. The lead
sleeve is retractable AND sliding. Nearly the entire pencil is metal
construction, including most of the interior and the clutch.
My only concern with it is that it is susceptible to having lead being
unintentionally sliding back up the clutch. This is most pronounced with harder
leads. I contacted Retro 51 with the concern and they suggested cleaning it
with the lead jam clearer. Normally that wouldn't affect a problem like this
but it DID work. I have mine loaded with 2B Pentel Ain Stein, which is my
preferred grade and brand anyway. But note that that is the only drawback that
I see to this piece. If weight matters to you, I recommend this to you over the
Rapid Pro. If weight doesn't matter, get a Rapid Pro. If price matters to you
(duh), this is a better buy over an 800.
