A substantial pencil with a fine black finish. Though metal doesn't feel too cold in winter.

Fed less lead out than Japanese pencils. A favorite.

I have this in .3mm and its full blown metal brother the silver rotring 600, which is a .5mm, and I'm loving them both.

What I'm saying is, please restock on this so I can complete my collection of rotring drafting pencils. :D

This is the same quality...

This is the same quality as the 600, 800 and Rapid Pro; however, since it's not 100 percent metal, it's nice and light to keep clipped onto my travelling notebook for notes and sketches. The fixed sleeve is also nice in that I think it adds stability to the writing process. The only hitch I had with this pencil was the lead it came with -- It wasn't smooth at all, but - rather - scratchy and difficult. I switched it out to a different brand and have had smooth writing since!

I bought this for working math problems, taking notes, and sketching. The first thing I noticed was the flawless build quality. It is has a good weight. It feels durable. The round knurled grip is secure without being too rough, and is slightly smaller than the diameter of the hard plastic hexagonal barrel. The advancement of the lead is positive. There is no way to retract or cap the tip, so it is not "pocket safe". Of the mechanical pencils having a knurled metal grip, the Rotring 500 is my favorite. The Alvin Draft/matic is a close second due to the coarser knurling, round barrel, and cushioned tip. Some pencils I try, but lose interest. The Rotring 500 is a classic pencil that holds my interest.

Very nice pencil. It does give the Rotring feel and look. I wish it were a tad bit heavier and broader at the grip but I guess that is what the 600 series is for. The knurling is also very grippy without being rough.

Horrible buying experience...

Horrible buying experience with Jetpens this time. Last month, I ordered this pen and received it few days later (fast shipping as always). Unfortunately, I got a pen showing some scratches (oh no, not again). I don't want to believe that they sent me a pen that was already used. I rather think that Jetpens needs to find a better way to store their inventory in the warehouse (to prevent them from rubbing together). Anyway, the pen was not acceptable to me. I requested RMA and processed the return. I had a simple and smooth return with Jetpens before (a pair of $ 6.75 scissors by USPS first class). However, I failed to consider that Rotring 500 0.7 mm is so popular on eBay, and I still sent it by USPS first class. I have never lost mail before. What bad luck, my Rotring 500 package vanished after three weeks of waiting and emailing Jetpens back and forth. I even attached my mailing receipt from UPSP to them. Jetpens said they cannot do anything unless I can provide a tracking number. Sigh....... I learned my lesson here.
