About pencil hardness grades:

A greater percentage of clay results in a harder pencil lead, and lead is graded by hardness. Pencils graded H, F, HB and B are of average hardness. Pencils ranging from 2B to 10B are softer and are used for sketching, while 2H to 10H pencils are harder than average. A common American #2 pencil is equivalent to an HB pencil.

These are the lead grades from hardest to softest:
10H | 9H | 8H | 7H | 6H | 5H | 4H | 3H | 2H | H | F | HB | B | 2B | 3B | 4B | 5B | 6B | 7B | 8B | 9B | 10B.

The harder the pencil the lighter the mark, and the softer B-grade leads tend to create darker colors and smear easily.

Great pencils.
Best I've ever used.
Select your hardness from the 20 options.
We are doing crossword puzzles so prefer either H or 2H lead hardness.
Great quality, they sharpen perfectly and hold their point very well.

This lead is darker and softer than your average 2h pencil.

That said, this is the perfect pencil for me. I used to do roughs with a 2h then finalize the linework with an F. Now I just use this one pencil, as a lighter touch will give you a nice light line, and a but of pressure gives you a darker line, without digging too much into the bristol board. The lead is smooth and not very greasy so it makes inking over easy and painless, and you still get the benefits of a stiff 2h lead for sturdy lines.

We work a lot of crossword puzzles, and went thru a lot of pencils finally settling on the 2H. The lead is hard enough to hold its point thru an entire puzzle. The softer leads (we tried several, all softer) are easier to write with, but the point gets dull too fast. We found the 2H to be just right. And, of course, the quality of the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils can't be beat. They are superb and consistent - highly recommended.
