November 2, 2010
It's soft, and thus is not really suited to sustained writing unless you're fond of sharpening a lot. The lead is wide, which may be useful to some, but since I'm a writer and not a sketch artist, it makes no real difference to me.

This pencil is relatively unknown, which is a little surprising as it's a little bit nicer than any of my other soft pencils, including the lauded Staedtler Mars Lumograph 4B and hyped Palomino Blackwing. In some way, the silent, humble excellence of the Uni Penmanship is attractive, but it also seems a little unfortunate that it's so often overlooked.

If you're a writer who likes soft pencils, this is probably the best available, and almost nobody knows it. For sketching, I'll defer to Alberto.

For the value-minded artist and wooden pencil connoisseur, this should be a no-brainer: with the same length and similar graphite handling properties of the second-to-none Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils, the Penmanship Writing Wooden Pencil 3-pack is a great deal (one could get all four 3-packs available for much less than a dozen Hi-Uni pencils, and end up with a mixed dozen of premium 4B & 6B pencils). Its ergonomic triangular profile is quite comfortable for precise drawing control for extended periods. They feel silky smooth gliding on card stock and quickly lay down large areas of deep dark tones. Thus they are great tools for shading and defining shapes in the final drawing stages. Their rich graphite cores are even wider in diameter than the Hi-Unis making them an even better deal. While there is no such a thing as a magic pencil that can make you a great artist overnight, these great pencils are certain to make your artistic journey a lot more pleasant and satisfying. Just to make it crystal clear, every budding artist should try adding these awesome tools to their analog sketch kits.

Love the color, thickness, and buttery quality of this pencil. Worth the price? If you have a task to use it for!
I was going to use it for notetaking, but quickly realized that my handwriting + this pencil thickness was too sloppy. Instead I have been using it to practice cursive, but prefer my preppy fountain pen for that.

I bought these to practice calligraphy, knowing they are very soft, but I might use them more for sketching. Calligraphy and Penmanship are too limiting for such a great pencil. It is buttery smooth to write with, yet the one I have used did not show any signs of being easily breakable. It also sharpened very nicely. It smudges a lot, which is a factor I would not prefer in a pencil made for writing; however, it is very desirable in a pencil used for sketching. This is a fun one to do both with, but if you use it in any journal and desire for it to last, I would spray the page with a fixative.

I totally agree with the other reviewer. I just got these pencils today and I love them. They are better than any sketching pencils I have ever owned. This is a great deal, considering the price of the Hi-Unis, and you would be crazy not to get these if you like drawing.

These are okay. The lead wears down very, very quickly. Super soft and smudges if you look at it. Not great for my purposes.

This pencil is by far one of the more unique pencils in my collection. It is a good triangular design which makes you have a good grip on the pencil and the lead is pretty top notch. The lead diameter is bigger than ordinary pencils and helps shade large amount of area if you are an artist. Highly recommended

I like these beautifully-finished pencils or general sketching and taking fast notes. They are bit soft for daily office tasks, but great for many other tasks and very smooth — they just glide across the paper. Why aren't all pencils triangular? Fits the hand better than a hexagon!

I have always rather write with a good pencil than a ball point pen and I liked soft leaded pencils that were smooth to use. I have three 4b's and three 6b's and I love them. I keep a ledger of things I need to remember and the pencils are just what I need to write with. Thank you for making such a good pencil. I will always keep three around.

Fun pencils! I use them as art/calligraphy pencils, since you can get a lot of darkness/thickness variation out of them!
