Gel Ink Pens

This post contains an outdated version of the Pilot Petit Pen System. For the newest version, see this post!

Pilot has recently redone their Petit pen line!

The whole system has been revamped. The line is now a customizable system consisting of separate pen bodies and ink cartridges. They are available in three different nib types: a fountain pen (Petit1), marker pen (Petit2) and brush pen (Petit3). Choose a pen body type and then choose your favorite ink cartridge color to customize your Petit pen (sold separately).

The ink cartridges are compatible across all three body styles. Select your nib and body style and ink color to create your favorite pen combination!

The Petit1 pen bodies have the same fountain pen nibs as the original line and is available in four different body colors.

The new Petit2 pens have a felt tip or "sign pen" nib. The body styles for these pens are slightly different than their Petit1 fountain pen counterparts, as only the barrel and clip are colored.

The new Petit3 pens have a calligraphy type brush tip. Like the Petit1 and Petit2, the body colors are transparent. The clip on these pens however, is a solid color.

The ink cartridges can be used with any of the Petit pen models, allowing you to fully customize your Petit pen.

What do you think will be your favorite Petit combination?

Since we have already compiled a list of our fine point pen recommendations, it seems only fair to provide a list of our pens with a broad point, because sometimes you just want a thick line.

The Uni-ball Signo Broad UM-153 Gel Pens are known for their smooth writing and opaque ink.

The Dong-A Anyball Ballpoint Pens are available in a few different broad sizes ranging from 1.0 mm - 1.6 mm.

The Uni-ball Power Tank Ballpoint Pens are designed to write in extreme conditions including wet surfaces, cool temperatures, and even upside down. Available in 0.7 mm and 1.0 mm size, in red, blue and black ink.

The Rotring Tikky Ballpoint Pens feature colorful, nonslip, dual material grips with an ergonomic wave design, and robust metal clips.

The Pilot Envelope Address Writing Gel Ink Pens have an oil based gel ink that dries super fast and produces very dark and shiny lines.

The Pilot BPS-GP Extra Broad Ballpoint Pens have an oil-based ink with a new formula, that is considered by some to be the smoothest ballpoint pen ink available.

The Ohto Fude Ball Roller Ball Pens are actually ball pens made to write like brush pens, and produce a lusciously thick line.

Please visit our updated Hi-Tec-C: A Comprehensive Guide article to see the latest lineup!

The Pilot Hi-Tec-C gel ink pens are one of our personal JetPens favorites as far as fine lines and smooth writing go. These are one of the few pens we carry that produce mechanical pencil-looking lines with gel ink.

The Hi-Tec-C pens are available in 0.25 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm sizes. The fine tips are pretty fragile though, so they will bend if dropped without the cap or possibly even from a very heavy handed writer. Regardless, this is the perfect pen for writing detailed notes in a smaller area. The ink is a special gel formula that dries quickly and does not smudge as easily as other gel ink pens. Some people do find the smaller point sizes (0.25 and 0.3 mm) to be a little scratchy, and they will poke through thinner paper like post-its or copier paper.

Another bonus is that the same great writing and ink quality of this pen is available in a fancier form. Let's face it, if you are going to use this pen to take notes in a high-stakes executive power meeting, the original clear plastic body can look a little cheap. For this reason Pilot has the Hi-Tec-C Cavalier pen which is a more sophisticated and formal version, that is refillable. The full metal body gives a nice weight in hand when writing, but it is only refillable with the designated Cavalier refills, so your soda blue or mandarin orange Hi-Tec-C refill will not work in this dressed up pen body.
