How Many Pens Do You Have?
onelonegunman - 17 Jan 2009, 08:28 pm
Excluding all those craft pens and regular "Fine Point" Sharpies (you can include Extra Fine, Ultra Fine and double pointed Sharpies) how many gel, liquid ink (rollerball), porous point (felt tip) fountain pen and ballpoint pens do you have?
I have approximately 250 pens in the above categories! I just want to know if that's a lot and does it qualify me as a true penholic?
Metternich - 19 Jan 2009, 12:15 am
I have no exact idea of how much of each type I have, but I do have around 450 or so pens. So, trying to estimate;
250 of these are ballpoints. Most of these ballpoints aren't really part of my writing collection, they're just pens I got from working this summer at a doctor's office so they're more of a thing I like to collect than use. So maybe, I have 100 ballpoints in my collection for use.
and for the rest I estimate 75 rollerballs, 50 gels, and maybe 40 disposable fountain pens and 40 felt tips.
now this seems like a lot, but I scored a lot of this for free, most of my ballpoints suck (like the drug advertisement pens) and I'm using up pens all the time.

Wow! I guess I have a way to go then!

I don't count my Sharpies either, in my pen collection.

You all make me feel so much better. I thought I had more pens than anyone.
I just did a quick count of my pens at home and in my bag, and I found about 65 gel pens (mostly Slicci, Hi-Tec-C and Uni-ball Signo DX), 4 Hi-Tec-C Coleto multi-pens, 5 Cross ballpoints, and 17 fountain pens. (I had no idea I had that many fountain pens until I counted them just now.)
I also keep about a dozen gel pens permanently at work, but I didn't count those because they're duplicates of my most frequently-used colors.

I think it's pretty funny and also interesting how we have certain pens that we don't count in our collection.

Ok.... I may need an intervention...Hi My name is Cali and I have a problem.....(in unison: Hi Cali)
My latest count on my pens was last summer and I had reached 1,685..
..I have not counted lately, but I am pretty sure I have reached the 2,000 mark...(not including my sharpies...)
Crazy? Maybe...ok yes ...definately...
My problem is when I find a pen I like, I usually buy the entire rack of them, so I will never run out.
Ultra Fine pens are my weakness..at any given time in my purse I will have three to four sets of pens..(packs of 5,10, or 20), different styles to give myself some options...
you never know when there will be a pen emergency........not that I would lend anyone my pen(s)..
..thats just crazy talk...
I guess there could always be a worse addiction....right?....right?

If SF Susan is a Novice, as I called her, then you are the Queen of the Penaholics! All hail the Queen!
I know what you mean about the not wanting to run out of a pen that you like. You never know when they might stop making that particular model! It's happened before! It'll happen again! Actually, it's a conspiracy! The pen makers get you hooked on one particular pen. They make it sound like it's the only pen to have. Then when they have you hooked, POW! They drop the model from the line and introduce a new model! We should unite... Form a union or something!... We should fight this blatant consumerism... No, wait, we're the consumers!... I'm so confused!... I need a new pen, no, a dozen new pens!... No, 2 dozen, yea, 2 dozen new pens! And 6 new pencils...
All Hail The Queen!

I love pens. I'm particular about pens. But I guess I'm not a "collector." I'm more in search of THE PERFECT PEN. If a pen I buy isn't up to snuff in some respect, I pass it on immediately. Or if I find a pen I like *better*, the previous pen is passed on to someone else. Current favorites are Signo DXs and RTs, Sliccis, and my one Jetstream Sport (goodbye F-301s). My Ohto Tasche rollerball is a keeper; my Couleur found a new home; my Sharpie is on probation. My G-TEC-C4s are being used up and given away. Honestly, I thought I had a lot of pens.
You guys have a LOT of pens!
:D

Anything that you feel that you just can't live with, send it my way! I an't proud! I'll take anything!

Haha! I love seeing all these pen geeks coming out here! :)
Jeeze - who could ever have 2000 pens? Yikes. How do you organize them all?
I don't count Sharpies either - they are more those porous marking pens.
I think I have about 110, not counting repeats or the ones I've relegated to the "only for inspection purposes" pencil cup. I wouldn't mind having more on hand just as samples (such as Uni's DX line, some Pentel Slicci's, more Uni Alpha Gel HD's in cool colors, etc.), but I don't want the pen around taking up too much space and my disposable pen $ if I don't also enjoy writing much with it. My favorite traits in a pen are a phat rubbery comfortable grip, a nice smooth easy line (esp. finer points), and dark ink (I find most bp's inks aren't dark enough).
My faves are the Energels and the Jetstreams - I wish they'll soon come out w/ a lot more phat-gripped shells for these inks. They are the smoothest and best-performing, that I've found. Thank goodness for Japanese pen engineers!
Oh yeah, I'd also love to more pretty green shades. Uni's Alpha Gel HD green barrel is lovely. Uni and Pilot have some nice green gel shades. But I'd love to see more "uber"-performance pens in nice green shades.
PencilNStuffAddict - 23 Mar 2009, 05:01 pm
woooooooow. you should go for the record. (i'm not sure if there is one, but there should be!) i mean, about 2000? that's crazy! i've got an entire boxful at home and it's about 200! i have so little compared to you guys!
zero_dgz - 23 Mar 2009, 05:35 pm
I don't think you want to include disposable ballpoints, because I have about 2000 of those from my old job. I have a batch of about 500 of their pencils, too (they're out of business, so nobody misses them).
If you count actual pens and pencils and such that I actually care about, the number is much smaller. I have with a cursory count about 50 pens and pencils of various descriptions that I can think of and locate right now, and ooldes more lost in desk drawers, stuck in coffee mugs, mouldering at the bottom of binders and backpacks, rattling around the car someplace...
dzdncnfsd - 23 Mar 2009, 05:40 pm
Yeah - in my book, I wouldn't really count the cheapo inferior "free" pens - like the ones drug companies give out. Unless they were really cool or great in some way, I guess. But I think those are pretty rare.

There are a few drug rep pens I would love to have Risperdal had a pen with a mood band and one with water and floaty shapes in it. You post just reminded me of them...off to ebay...ha ha!
holgalee - 24 Mar 2009, 11:27 am
I don't even want to know how many pens I have; I just know I have too many to finish using in my lifetime! I've decided to give away some ballpens and maybe gel pens as well, after I've confirmed I'm really into fountain pens ;)

Yeah, there
must be some cool freebie promotional pens out there - but they are probably few and far in between! Almost all the ones I've ever seen - I wouldn't keep in my collection! :P

Wow... you guys impress me! i'm at about 20 pens right now - not nearly much. since im really more focused on quality, i'm going to keep this number at about 20.
i ordered about 12 pens from jetpens on friday. so even including these 12, im way under 40 pens total.
man, i can't imagine having over 200 pens... soon enough, you guys will have to start attending PA meetings. ;-D

a pen 'database' ....? oh my lord 8)
I have friends that are addicted to motorcycles, cars, shoes, sneakers, electronics (computers, mp3 players, etc) so I feel not so bad having an affordable addiction.
It is a good feeling to be able to write with the tools that you want. I write a lot at work and even more in school/class so it's cool to find a pen that matches a particular class - like having a fast/smooth pen to take notes really fast, etc.
And, thanks to another member of this board, I have also started a notebook collection... LOL... And again, this is something affordable. Soon enough, I will be going through notebooks like crazy so I need to build up a nice stash of them. I used up 4 spiral 100-page notebooks last summer alone doing *light* math work and i was -NOT- enrolled in a class... and this Fall is going to be even crazier!
I just wish that better penmanship could be purchased...

I love notebooks too!
But I'm not into the expensive ones.
I'm perfectly fine with a dollar store notebook. Esp when it's 2/$1
Speaking of which, I'm dying to know if anyone knows when and where I can find 10/$1 notebooks.
I know Stop&Shop has them - but I'm not sure WHEN and
I'm wondering about everywhere else...
I wanna STOCK UP :D
I will totally buy 5 dollars worth - w/o flinching. Why not? :)
I love a cart full of frakken notebooks.
Dunno if National Wholesale Liquidators still has em, but one time they did, about 10 years ago -- 11 or 12 years ago,
and my mom just threw a whole crapload in the shopping cart lol
The 2nd time a few years after that, they had the sale and STUPID ME, I passed up on it because "I didn't need notebooks".
I could have hoarded em - they would have been used eventually.
Like NOW, When I'm dying to stock up! lol
It's so funny and awesome to see a whole cart full of notebooks.... ^_^

LOLOL.
If it helps any, I picked up a dozen 100 page spiral bound Staples notebooks yesterday for 33 cents each. I also got a mini-stapler for a dollar.
so 12 spiral notebooks + stapler came out to $5.36 after taxes.
Just an idea. I will definitely stock up if I come across a 10/$1 sale... sounds so cheap... like a price right out of the 80s...

I have no idea.
I recently did -something- of an inventory on all my notebooks, but since then I've acquired a few more....smaller ones(namely some midori A5's and a few dollar store finds, oh, and some free ones that I got lucky with).
but if you held a gun to my head....
I'd say there were about 100 or so in my room. I don't bother with ballpoints anymore, so they sit unused. I might drag out my sharpies in every color in the universe(Fine point no less), and draw with them(they are sold as "art markers"), but besides that I've converted almost completely to fountain pens.
Yes, they take extra care but i love the inks, the colors, and the ease of putting ink to paper.

I loooooooooooooooove fountain pens.
I don't HATE ballpoint - but if i'm gonna buy ballpoint, they either gotta be Japanese, or have something special about them.
I def hate American ball point pens.
I leave those out in my room for other people to use

well the issues are thus:
1.) I'm left-handed.
2.) I get hand cramps easily. I used to all the time in high school before I discovered fountain pens, and I used to have to get used to gripping lousy pens(with no grip) while my hands were sweaty(VERY tightly) to write down notes. During the summertime I don't write as much, so I would usually have to get used to writing a lot again. I thought hand cramps were something I just had to put up with, a labor of love, you know? But once I started daily journaling/writing out my stories longhand(adds and extra step of editing for me), I knew I had to switch. So first I went to some Unison 12(?) per pack of gel pens, which aren't <bad> but not fantastic either. I beleive I got mine from dollar general. I went through them quickly, and when I had two left in a pack I got some nice gel ink pens from Pilot, some Extra Fine VBall RT's(in black). I bought two packs of them, cause they were cheap at the time, but I ended up writing through them very quickly(their ink goes faster than ballpoints), and around the same time I started carrying around a leather-look comp book for journaling, discovered moleskines, then rhodia, and the fountain pen community behind it, and eventually made my first order to Jetpens at the end of that journal(my first pen tests were conducted in it).
The end.
(yes, that's a lot to read, sorry)
3.)I like colors! and being able to mix my own ink. it's awesome.

I seem to have lost count of how many pens I have. I've collected so many pens, mostly from trade shows, conferences, my co-workers desk :D
I think my favorite has to be weird pens that glow in the dark or light up.
peekatyou - 08 Aug 2009, 04:06 am
i also have lost count but i decided to count at least what i have at school with me. i'm a college student and my desk is pretty small but i have 340 pens on me at the moment. however, i have a fairly large desk at home with spacious drawers and they're filled to the brim with pens. i'd estimate about 2000+ pens at home. i go through pens so quickly though. in a quarter (10 weeks + finals, 11 weeks total) i would completely use up about 15 pens just on journals, notes, essays, and finals written on bluebooks. a bluebook is just an empty lined notebook in which you complete your exams, not sure what they're called elsewhere. i really ought to take notes on my macbook but i can never abandon the tried and true written notes. aha! i reveal my excuse for purchasing so many pens!
as i sit with my credit card on my lap and the jetpens order page:
but look at all the pretty colors! .03 mm fine tips?! the madness! good think i'm not in debt. well, after college is over, we'll see... oh the cost of education.

Freaks.
I found 18 in my pencil case, mostyl rollerballs and different pencils for technical drawings, and one brush.
And i ordered 8 pens from jetpens ^^ (first step to become addicted  ) it`s just because you hardly get any brush pens here :?

I have been collecting pens for over 35 years now.
From my last estimate, I have about 7000 in my collection now. The last hundred or so are those coming from JetPens.
I too do not count the low office supply stick pens or the Sharpies (although I do have the new stainless steel deluxe Sharpie) and the highlighters and other markers. My pens range from the standard pens up through my $700 Caran D'Ache.
And within those 7000, there are exactly two fountain pens.
My Favorite? Ha !
