Is Kuru Toga lead holder retractable?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone who owns a Kuru Toga pencil knows whether or not the pointy metal lead holder is able to retract back into the body of the pencil (like most mechanical pencils)? If not I think I would be paranoid about it becoming bent so that lead breaks on the way out. Eek!

This has happened to an old Pentel pencil I had with a non-retractable sleeve and it's really painful to try to bend it straight and it's never the same again :(

speedypear,

Saw your other post about the kuru toga. I have both the plastic and 'high grade' version and neither of their tips retract unfortunately (maybe it isn't possible with the 'engine'?).

I know what you mean though, it's a b**** when you dent the sleeve and it kills the lead coming out. It always happened to me when I tried pencil spinning tricks and it'd fly 4 feet down to the hard floor.

Just avoid bending it altogether, it's a nice pencil!

That is unfortunate! Maybe I can find a pencil cap that can fit over the lead end.

Funny, when 0.5 mm drafting pencils first came out I used to press so hard when I wrote that I actually broke off the lead sleeve of 2 different pencils! Since then I've switched to 0.3 mm drafting pencils and I've never broken or bent another lead sleeve. I really don't think about it. I just use my pencils. Even when storing the 3 pencils that I have with lead sleeves that are retractable I leave them exposed. Go figure!
