KinoKuniya Bookstore in Manhattan

sh00k - 05 Apr 2009, 05:37 pm
After joining this site, I actually came across a huge 3-story Japanese magazine/book store on 42nd street and 6th avenue (in Manhattan.) They have a huge selecton of Japanese magazines, books, and best of all - STATIONARY! I was in this place for like 2 hours on Friday looking through a lot of the stuff they had. They have pens, pencils, pencil cases, stickers, bags and so much more. there is a cafeteria on the 2nd floor (out of 3 floors). It is approximately 24,000 square feet so just imagine how huge this place must be - compared to nyc standards. It's a great store and I'll definitely be visiting it again soon.

I am putting this up in case anyone is interested in it.

(you have to copy and paste this entire url to see the google results for it - with address, reviews, etc)

Kinokuniya is indeed awesome.

Today i decided to visit it for the first time.

When i got inside and saw the pen selection....

I almost fainted...

I spent around $60 today!!

They had things i'd never come across before..

It is kinda pricey...but i think thats the only con.
I went to the one in Costa Mesa, the employees are very friendly and the shop is very clean and organized.

If the price was lower it'd be the perfect place...

LOL. i have only been to the one here in manhattan and the pen selection is breath-taking but the downside, at least to the one here, is that the pens are all scrunched up in like a 6-foot wide shelf. they have like 200 types of pens all next to eachother and it's tough to see what's what, etc.

as a plus - they have sample pens out so you can see how you write before you buy. unlike a place like staples where people even open up packages to write on the price-tags on the shelves.... LOL...

anyway, yeah, this place rocks. too bad i was in a rush. the next time im going, me and the pen isle are going to spend some quality time together...

lol...definitely agree.

The writing samples help me sort out the things i want. or else i would go bankrupt...

If i had all the time and money in the world, i think i would live there

jessiew - 01 Jul 2009, 01:06 pm
so i'm planning on visiting the kinokuniya in costa mesa this weekend, and i know there is one in los angeles too. i want to visit them both but we'll see how it goes with timing and such. i don't know if my best friend is up for a "pen shopping only trip" instead of going to disneyland like originally planned haha.

i really hope i find some neat stuff. if i come back with handfuls i'll be sure to post some pictures. i'd love to go to the manhattan one as well though :D
-XFinfannelX- - 02 Jul 2009, 12:47 pm
DINSNEY LAND? ill just have the tickets :P

anyways theres some other stores near kinokuniya in costa mesa

i havent been to the one in L.A. though
jessiew - 02 Jul 2009, 03:38 pm
do you possibly know the names of the other stores in costa mesa that are worth going to?

haha i'm hoping that disneyland isn't too crowded cuz of the 4th... but i guess we shall see. possibly i could entice my best friend to more fun stores then standing in 90 minute ride lines, sweating bullets with other "friendly" disneyland visitors.

The cafetria is on the 2nd floor?
Did the move it? Last time i went there, it was

Upstairs - cafeteria/dvds/manga w/e
"2nd" floor (goround floor) books/registers/bathrooms
downstairs (stationary pens pencil cases and whatever else they had.)

I hate how every time I wanna look at a certain section of pens, SOMEBODY has gotta be standing in my way! lol :) :)

Also - there's one in Nyack (Palisades Center or w/e it's called)
I wish one of the malls in freaking NJ had a Kinokuniya.

It used to be a Kinokuniya in Edgewater (AWWWESOME!!)
but now it's a SANSEIDO (still cool) - altho Sanseido has the points card :D
sh00k - 21 Jul 2009, 08:45 am

You see someone standing there, trying to look: MOOOOVE!
If i see someone next to me trying to look at the same place I'm looking, I move over.

I dunno if it's cause I don't get there often
but do you ever feel like you're forgetting something when you leave?
Like there's something else you should have gotten or picked up, but can't pinpoint it? :)

^_^
I always leave both Kinokuniya's vaguely thinking there's something else I could have gotten but I'm not sure what. =)
Big Boss G - 21 Jul 2009, 10:24 am
OH! SANSEIDO in Edgewater (595 River Rd) has something I've never seen in a Kinokuiya, ever.

SHITAJIKI

^o^

That's one thing that makes Sanseido different.

The Nyack store has KINOKUNIYA NJ price stickers on it. :P

LOL - I do get this feeling often. Thank god I live close to the store. I stop by it randomly like on my way home from work or on my way home from class. I usually go with my girlfriend. she checks out all the magazines while i inhale the japanese stationary store scent for like an hour and a half. LOL.

i have bought pens there, liked them, then gone back the next day for other colors, different sizes, etc. i have spent maybe $50 there on pens and $23 dollars on a domokun doll that now guards my apartment. LOLOL.

i have looked around at other things - notebooks, pencil cases, other stationary related things, and have not really found anything that compelled me to buy it. since i recently started notebook collecting, i am planning on stopping by there again soon so i can maybe try to find a nice/unique notebook....

but with the recession and all, im trying to spend as little as i can on things... so i duno.... i'll see what i can find...
Big Boss G - 21 Jul 2009, 12:54 pm
Yeah - I'm using Birthday and Christmas money to buy pens w/.

Altho that's what I normally do anyway.

Sometimes. :)

MOST of the time.

PS:

Mitsuwa has a shuttle bus for Mitsuwa Customers.

You can take it from the Port Authority
and it goes directly to Mitsuwa Plaza.
(Sanseido, Shiseido,Mars New York, the tableware place)

I've never taken it myself tho. :)
sh00k - 21 Jul 2009, 02:35 pm
haha - cool. the stores you can take the shuttle to - are they stationary stores? if so, im interested as port authority is on my block! ^_^ l0l0l

speaking of bdays - back in april a friend of mine gave me $200 cash for my bday... ( a week or two earlier, i had gotten him a $450 camera for his bday- haha) anyway, i took that 200 and put it towards a new bike. so i bought a $550 trek mountain bike. i have put 100 miles on it so far - not so much since i only ride it when i really have the time for it...
Big Boss G - 21 Jul 2009, 08:58 pm
Bike across the GWB to NJ 8) :D

Fort Lee is Korean, so there's GOTTA be a Morning Glory somewhere.
(You come into Ft Lee as soon as you get off the GWB on the NJ side)

There's a Borders in Ft Lee - and they have PILOT VARSITY pens (same as Pilot V Pen) and some other crappy pens that are hit or miss (and all ballpoint)

Borders is bascially only good for Pilot Varsity and Precise Grip pens.Maybe G-2 -- I forget if they have those.
Unless you like
a) American pens
b) ballpoint

But I totally prefer Japanese pens. Duh. We all do, otherwise we wouldn't be here !

Yup - SANSEIDO - in Mitsuwa Plaza!

Also "MARS New York" has SOME pens, pencils, toys, cases, resin/PVC figures etc.

Sanseido also offers a members card - spend 100.00, get a 10.00 gift certificate to use either @ Sanseido or Mitsuwa MarketPlace.

Sanseido has shitajiki, campus notebooks, pencil cases, CDs, a video rental place, cards, folders, envelopes, kiddie books, manga, japanese books etc etc etc

I wonder why they switched over to a SANSEIDO in the first place....
(Yeah i miss my Kinokuniya......) lol

Just noticed..... You posted this in April ;) You only THEN found Kinokuniya? ;)
sh00k - 21 Jul 2009, 09:57 pm
well, the order was this:

1 - in april i found jetpens.com and placed my first order around april 10 or something

2 - i was walking to the staples by me also in april when i saw kinokuniya. yeah, it was the first time i ever saw the place. i stepped in and within 2 weeks, i had spent like $50 to $70 there already.

3 - then i placed another jp order towards the end of april :-D

I had always gone to staples for pens but hated buying pens i could not test out. it sucks buying a 5 pack or 12 pack of pens only to find out that they suck! so when i found jet pens, i was like AWESOME, i practically bought one of everything. LOLOL. well, i bought 1 of all the pens i had SOME interest in... since i dedicated myself to school for the next few years, i figure i should be writing with the utencils which i am 100% comfortable with. so my pen addiction went crazier after april. lol

so - yeah - to answer your q - i just found kinokuniya in april 8)
