My (Japanese) Nomadic Wise Walker WR-08 bag
sh00k - 03 Apr 2009, 04:12 pm
Although it's not a pen or pencil case, it's still awesome =]
the reasons why i bought it:
1) it's japanese
2) i probably won't ever see anyone else (in manhattan) with it ;-D
I got this bag from flight001 a few weeks ago and it's the most efficient bag I have ever come across. It's small, compact and has more pockets than I think i'll ever need.
I did not take pictures of it but someone else did at this other forum -
http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=17148.0
and here it is on the flight001 site -
http://www.flight001.com/store/trip.htm?itemid=2700&sid=817&page=1
It has sooo many useful pockets. The booklet it came with said that it's a bag perfect for the 'city walker' because it was designed in a way to organize all the things you would need quick access to in an urban atmosphere. it's great for school, sightseeing, etc.
I reccommend it if anyone is looking for an awesome bag.

Nice, very nice indeed (it's the A4 Messenger Bag, right?). Want one, can't afford one! Igor is jealous!
sh00k - 03 Apr 2009, 05:07 pm
yeah it's the A-4 messenger. It's called A-4 because it's comparable in size to A-4 envelopes. something like that.

Awesome bag. I think I'd like compression straps on the bottom too, but I am picky about bags in general, coming from a backpacking perspective.
Nosferatuia - 04 Apr 2009, 02:10 am
Very neat...thanks for sharing that with us. I really like messenger bags, they always seem easier to get things out of than standard backpacks for me. Oh yeah, messenger...now it makes sense...A4 envelopes, so I guess sort of like a Yeoman bag 8). Geez I need to get some sleep.

Yea, me too! But every time I go to bed I've got to water the cat before I can actually go to bed! Don't ask!... OK, I'll tell you! One of our cats, Emily, stays in our bedroom at night. She hardly ever drinks out of a regular bowl, instead she prefers drinking from the bathroom sink! So one of us has to turn the tap on to let her drink. It seems that no matter what time after my lovely wife goes to bed I go to bed, Emily wants a drink of water! So I have to turn the tap on and sit and wait for her to finish before I can go to bed! Strange cat!
sh00k - 04 Apr 2009, 04:46 pm
the bag is really light and about straps on the bottom - i am sooo freaking picky with my bags that i would never and have never placed this bag on a floor anywhere. that way it doesnt get dirty or collect any gunk from nyc streets.
i just wish i could find more Nomadic bags/accessories here in the US. once you have one of their products you can see the amount of thought and common sense they put into the design... well worth the price, IMO.
-XFinfannelX- - 04 Apr 2009, 07:47 pm
That is a VERY nice bag, i just might get one for school
thanks for showing us :D
Nosferatuia - 05 Apr 2009, 03:09 am
Very interesting, I have never heard of a cat drinking out of the tap like that, but hey we all have our quirks and endearing qualities including Emily. I think I remember a certain story about Emily from your blog, such a funny kitty, I bet she's cute too :D!

She's the culprit in "Cat Farts" and the real life inspiration for the poem "Miss Priss", both posted on The Painted Telephone blog.

about using this bag for school - keep in mind that it is a small size. as you can see in the pictures the other person posted (link above), you can fit things into the main pocket that are as wide as a 500-page computer book/manual. as for me, i usually haul 3 folders, a binder (meade hybrid notebook), and one or two paperbacks. that's all in the main compartment.
there are other spots where you can put large (but narrow) items. there is a 'slot' on top of the bag for files/papers you may need quick access to. also, under the flap, there is a zippered pocket which you can also put a couple of novels into.
another cool thing - the should strap on the bag has a 'sticky' texture to it so when you sling the bag over your shoulder, it stays put! this is an awesome feature i wish other bags had. when you lean over or are walking, the sticky portion of the shouldpad stays exactly where you put it on your shoulder. no need to keep adjusting it every 2 minutes as you walk. AWESOME feature.
all in all - this bag rocks. i am coming up on spring break so i will post my pictures of the bag and answer any q's anyone may have.

Just a heads up - JetPens now carries Nomadic pencil cases! It's the same company that made this bag (above)! cool.

Beautiful bag! Has anyone tried the Nomadic pencil cases? I just recently bought an Edwin case, but now I'm thinking I might regret it, as these Nomadic cases look wonderful.

Me, me, me...I have...pick me! :D I have both the
Nomadic PN-01 Two Layer Pencil Case in blue and the
Nomadic PE-10 Tri-Fold Pencil Case in red and I love 'em both! 8)
I'll be reviewing them over at
Future; Nostalgic when I get time, but for now I'm really impressed with the build quality and the number of pockets/pen holders/etc. There's absolutely
nothing like them available in the UK, so there
is an element of novelty value, but I know quality when I see it!
I've also got an Edwin case, is yours the Denim Top-Loader too by any chance? Also a very well built case IMHO, but heavier and stiffer than the Nomadic PN-01, of the two I like the Nomadic better; and it's slightly smaller which makes transporting it easier.
Cheers,
Sam

Love the name "Future Nostalgic," very cool. Thanks for the reply. The Edwin case I have is not the Denim one, it's actually the Folding Pencil Case (Black). To be honest, I really really love it. My only gripe is that I wish it was a bit bigger; I don't want a shoe-sized case, but I was hoping that, in addition to all my pens and pencils, I could fit my electric eraser in there as well. Technically, I can, but it gets quite bulky, so I've opted to leave it out. The case I'm now looking at is the Nomadic PE-09 Flap; from the photos it looks really roomy, but I wonder if it's much different than the Edwin. Glad to hear you're impressed with the material and quality... makes me that much more tempted to order. Just dunno if I'll regret it, since I just bought the Edwin!

I agree, it looks totally awesome. Unfortunately it's not available in the UK. Flight 001 doesn't ship to the UK and I can't find anyone else who will. :(
Looks like it's going to have remain on my wish list.
Cheers,
Sam

Sh00k,
Thank you for positing the wonderful review. It is short, but sweet, and right to the point kind of review (and that is the way i like it). This bag is gorgeous! It wins the Ms. Universe beauty pageant, handsdown. Drum roll, please! "...and the winner is Ms. Nomadic Wise Walker (representing Japan). Guess what, i just ordered one from Flight001 after reading this post, actually i called their Customer Service since it is not available online (they are out-of-stock), so when i called Customer service, they said a Flight001 California store has it and that they will ship it to me from California. Of course, it is only available in Black (i think the Gray one is pretty). I know i cannot really afford it, this is really out of my price range, so it is pretty much once in a "college lifetime" moment for me. :D I have never purchased a bag more expensive than $33 (including tax), this one i paid $69 with shipping included (original item price is $62).

Sh00k,
By the way, you won't have to worry about me showing up in Manhattan with my soon to arrive A4 Messenger bag.

congrats on the purchase nand! you will be sooo happy with the black. i first saw it in gray and when i saw the black one, i almost switched. the only reason i didnt get it in black is because i already have a black bag - a timbuk2 blogger bag ( http://www.amazon.com/Timbuk2-Blogger/dp/B001F513IW - but in ALL black )
ps, i paid about the same price as you for the bag. the flight001 store in the village here in nyc was having a sale where it was something like spend $70 and get 10% off the purchase so i paid roughly what you paid.
please post pics when you get it ;]

and about reviews in general - i keep it short because i feel there are only two categories that you can really rate on - either you hate it or love it. no reason to go into pages and volumes of commentary when the product does not warrant it. i dont think a gray area exists.... if you are going to spend you hard earned money on something, i would think you would like to spend it on something you COMPLETELY fall heads over heels for.... otherwise why spend money on it, right? i duno... that's how i think.... im a frugal minimalist. lol
if i love something i buy, i will post why i love it and why others might love it.
if i hate something i buy, i will post why i hate it and why others might hate it so they dont wind up wasting money on something that may suck.

I totally agree with you on the "either you like it or you don't" philosophy. I have a full black FILA backpack, which i have been using for the past seven years and still going strong, that is the best backpack i have ever had (my dad purchased it for me from Costco for my last year in high school). When i saw your post, i totally fell in love with the backpack, i liked the color you purchased and thought it would be something different from the full black backpack i have had for so long, but since Flight001 did not carry that color, i decided to go with the Black one (i had a feeling that i could not go wrong with Nomadic). When i received the Black beauty this past Wednesday, i was actually glad that they only had it in Black because as you already know it is just gorgeous! :)
By the way, i will be posting photos of this bag within the next week or so. This bag is so light and as you said before it has tons of pockets (a lot of which i probably will not be using either). Now i have a Nomadic Messenger back to go with my Nomadic Pencil pouch. Woo Hoo! :D
JonelB - 13 Jun 2009, 12:01 am
BAAAAGGGGG I want.
but my mom actually caught me looking at computer bags earlier today and said "put that back. If you want another you need to get rid of some in your closet."
which I do have a ton. I like the pockets. I keep trying to find a good bag that's a mix of pockets and cavernous opening so I can stuff a jacket in but still put things in specific spots. No dice so far.
Really cool bag, though. I hope you enjoy it and it has a long life of use and abuse. ^.^

I agree with the reviewing of the bag, but not of the method.
An example would be for someone who is going to use a timbuk2 messenger as a diaper bag as opposed to a person who uses it to schlep groceries or books.
Everyone uses everything different, so you may not like it, or you may like it, but it's important to point out features that other people who aren't using it the same way might want.
Just my 2 cents.

It's a beauty, i am sure you will love it. It is reasonably compact, but at the same time it can hold a lot pens, and that is what i love about Nomadic cases/bags. :D
