I got these to review last year for a Flickr promo. I did a proper write up for it now that I have a blog thing :) I hope it turned out okay!

I was fortunate to receive some brush pens last year from Jet Pens, for a Flickr review. I thought I would add it as a post :) I was given three pens to try. A Pentel Standard Brush Pen and two Kuretake Colour Brush Pens in blue and brown.

The Pentel Standard Brush Pen.

The Pentel Standard Brush Pen has a nylon brush tip and contains aqueous dye based ink. This pen has many similarities to using a traditional paintbrush. The ink is conveniently stored in a barrel, which once empty can be replaced with a new refill. This pen might provide a few challenges for those who are less experienced with painting or inking. It requires a bit more control to use this type of brush, than with the felt tip pens. Personally, I really enjoyed experimenting with this pen. I loved the watercolour and ink effects I could create with it.

This is an example of an image I painted using the Pentel brush pen. I applied ink from the pen to a palette. This way, I could paint with the ink in a traditional manner:

With the next drawing, I used a brush pen with a brown refill. The pen was dipped directly into water to create varying shades of colour and effects. :

The Kuretake Colour Brush Pen.

The Kuretake Colour Brush Pens feature a brush felt tip, and water based ink. There are 12 colours available: Carmine Red, Scarlet Red, Pink, Blue, Persian Blue, Green, Light Green, Yellow, Brown, Light Brown, Lilac, and Light Gray. These can be purchased individually, or in sets of 6 or 12. These are great introductory brush pens. They are easy use and economically priced.
The felt brush on this pen was very resilient. It retains its point very well, is easy to control and endures a lot of drawing and writing. I thought this pen was wonderful for brush lettering.

The little octopus loves how his lettering turned out!

It was also a good choice for bold line drawings and colouring.

I think he was very impressed with the pens performance.

I think brush pens are great drawing tools. After testing these out, I have since purchased various kinds! I think are some of my favorite drawing tools. They are versatile and can be used for a variety of artistic styles including traditional sumi-e painting, calligraphy, comic book art and fine art. If you have not used them before I would suggest giving one a try!

Very nice review. I enjoyed reading it. I now have a little better respect for brush pens.

I tried to post the above comment on your blog but when the word verification came up there were no words to read and verify! This happened to me on Nosferatuia's site as well. On hers I tried 2 different browsers. The odd thing is all 3 of our blogs are at Blogger (blogspot.com) and I couldn't even post a comment with my Google account!!! What's up with that?

Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it. I really got into brush pens. I've been trying to work on some other drawings with the different kinds I have gotten lately, but I have been a bit distracted and mainly making a lot of little sketches, but nothing that great. I'll have to do another once I make something decent. :)
