Voted 'yes' because even though the mechanism might leave your pencil constantly scratchy and take away the variance of line width, just that uni thought of this technology demonstrates how much they are thinking about the user. Finally, something new other than ergonomic pen shapes and shakers! :) I would definitely give it a try and would probably recommend this mechanical pencil to anyone other than artists who need the variance in line width a regular mechanical pencil offers.

Now that I look at it.. there's a pretty wide range of pencil body colours as well! 8)

I know that they have a wide range of colours and I have a PINK one!!
aleoneon - 21 Jun 2008, 12:04 pm
Nice.. I'm gonna go with the blue because of the lovely colour contrast between the blue and orange :)

:x Argh... I can't believe it! I just saw the kuru toga today at Takashimaya but all the .5's were already taken and my hand is too heavy for the .3mms  Hopefully they will restock soon!

YES!! Finally got the kuru toga! Was told that the writing experience would be a bit scratchy so I was curious to try it out. Well- it wasn't scratchy at all and the results were great! Here I wrote a page each (one with muji .5mm and one with kuru toga .5mm) to see how it compares to a regular mechanical pencil, and I have to say it exceeds expectations. Since the pencil remained the same width all the way through, the smaller writing enabled one more line to fit on the page! I really recommend this to anyone who writes with mechanical pencil. Plus, the body is quite lightweight for the way it looks. All around worth the $$

Yeah! The Kuru Toga is really a wonder. It has become my daily use pencil for school. After writing at a 45 degree angle for a few lines, the tip of the lead really becomes an inverted cone shape, and all the alphabets are consistant in width. It's truly amazing! It's available for sale on ebay, anyone who are interested in getting himself/herself one can search for Kuru Toga on ebay I'm having it for sale. :)

Does anyone know where to find this in the united state (other than ebay)??
aleoneon - 16 Jul 2008, 08:59 am
Depending on which state you are in, there may be a kinokuniya, in which case they might have kuru toga's in stock. Good luck!

I guess I'm behind the times... I found mine at and I was so curious I had to buy one (in blue). When I got it and tried it out I was amazed (and still am)! The 0.5mm pencil produces a 0.3mm line! How wonderful is that? This pencil has quickly become one of my top favorite pencils of all time. It writes smoother than a conventional 0.3mm pencil due to the leads constant rotation. I now have a use for all that 0.5mm HB lead I've accumulated over the years...

Not to long after I received my Kuru Toga 0.5mm pencil I was on eBay and found one in 0.3mm! I bought it, though it was a a couple of dollars more than the 0.5mm I bought from . I just couldn't resist, even though my wife is upset with me for buying so many pens/pencils. When it gets here I'll write a review of it in the forum, unless someone beats me to it. :)

Haha yeah, the thing about mechanical pencils is that unlike pens that can be tossed away once the ink runs out, mechanical pencils practically last forever if taken care of!

Anyone know if this pencil is in stock in kinokuniya (NYC)? only have the .3mm version and I want the .5mm one.

Found several here.

i got mine's today, but i got to say, this pen was made for writing japanese. the pen rotate everytime u press the lead onto the paper and left it up by 9 degree. a english word can be long or short. but japanese and chinese or korean require lift up the pen many time when writing a letter or character....

well this is just my point of view, but not worth it for writing english....
onelonegunman - 11 Oct 2008, 07:41 am
I beg to differ. I print when I write so I'm lifting the pencil between every letter, often a couple of times per letter. So my Kuru Toga rotates the way it should. My Kuru Toga 0.5mm yields a 0.3mm line while my 0.3mm model produces about a .2mm line, or less. I can really see a difference when using either pencil. The line width is constant from start to finish. Since there are quite a few Americans who print when they write and a lot of them, like me, prefer using a pencil, there is a big market for the Kuru Toga pencils here. :!:
