What are your favorite pens/pencils? Least favorite?

starjanae - 26 Sep 2005, 03:09 pm
I don't have any specific favorite brands (except Zebra pens!)...but I just love everything with a fine tip. And I hate almost all the plain pens that you can find in Staples.
betty - 26 Sep 2005, 10:18 am
Some of my favorites
- Uni-Ball Signos regular, Uni-Ball Signos .38mm
- Hi-Tec-C in 0.4mm or .5mm
- Pentel RSVP pen in black
- Papermate pens - as cheap as they are sold for, these write amazing! I love the blue ink pen in fine!

Least favorites
- BIC pens - seems like the ink is too light & you have to press so hard to get it dark.
- Pentel Sunburst gel pens - for some reason, their gel pens are really scratchy & has a problem with ink fading in and out while writing.
- (trying to think hard for pens I don't like since I wouldn't buy them in the first place)

What are your favorite pens/pencils? Least favorite? I'll make it simpler by letting you choose 3-5 favorites & least favorites so you don't have the hard choice or narrowing it down to just 1 item.

I like almost all pens from Japan. I hate all generic pens sold at local U.S. office supply stores. Especially Staple brand or office max brand pens...they leak!
eric - 03 Jan 2006, 04:13 pm
Well among my favorites for cheap pens (under $100) has to be
    Hi-TEC-C (rollerball)
    Copic Multi-liner SP (fineline marker)
    Sailor Gel Innovation pens (rollerball)
    Hero 100 (fountain)
    Ohto Super Promecha (pencil)

For Expensive pens:
    Pelikan 100 (vintage fountain)
    Parker 51 (vintage fountain)
    Montblanc 149 (fountain)
    Montblanc LeGrand 162 (rollerball)
Montblanc 164 Stainless 2 (ball pen and pencil)
    Nakaya Urushi (fountain)

The only pen I truly hate is that damn Papermate stick pen. extremely uncomfortable and the pen has no soul.
Dudleylau - 04 Jan 2006, 11:52 pm
My fav. pens are the Pilot Multiballs, they dont smudge, and writes so darn smooth. I hate pens that smudge and those rollerballs that i need to drive into the paper with the intent to kill to write....

oh yeah i also love my Shaker ORANGE dr. grip 0.5 pencil that i gave my bro... i need a new one dammit, im going through withdraws, that alpha gel aint cuttin it.
finoq - 08 Jan 2006, 03:04 am
I like the UM-151 .38 and .28s, Pilot V Signpen

I dislike the BIC Intensity...If you don't finish using the ink quickly enough, the rubber in the cap to protect the nib will soften and actually seep into the ball, denting it...
davidw89 - 21 Jun 2006, 05:21 am
Do jetpens stock the RSVP ones that u guys say are good?
betty - 21 Jun 2006, 08:25 am
I'm happy lots of people like the Uni-Balls. I adore them a lot.
davidw89 - 22 Jun 2006, 03:41 am
Damn all u Americans

favorite pens:

Pilot Precise V5 (or Technica)- they're my kind of perfect pen. needle points rule, and the ink seems to last forever. And they're recently now available in more colors!

Uniball Signo Micro - I only like gel when it's used with a very fine tip and the ink is very steady unlike other brands/models. But then I haven't used these very long.

Pilot Varsity - Disposable fountain pens! It's more cost effective to actually buy a nice fountain I think, but I got two boxes of Varsitys for free when my boyfriends roommate moved out and left some of his stuff...

least favorite:

Skilcraft Unknown model - Skilcraft is a brand used by the US government, so you can't find these in a stationary store, they're average quality pens that I'd never buy but my dad gets them for free. most kinds work fine but there's this one paticular ball point, I don't know what it's called but all of the pens I have used have had the ink dry up in the middle of writing, no amount of stabbing the paper, wiping the tip with alcohol, etc. will bring it back. And it didn't run out of ink, because it's happend to pens that were brand new! I once almost failed an exam because one of these died on me, lucky I always carry a backup. Also the ink stays "sticky" long after you've written something.
here is a picture of it:
Image

Staedler triplus roller - can be a noisy writer. and the ink flow varies - sometimes it's what you would expect, other times all you'll get is a very very fine line, and then back to normal! this does not make my ugly handwriting look any better, because it varies down to the letter.
finoq - 30 Jun 2006, 06:30 am
Haha I have a lot of backup pens for exams... 4 Black Signo DX's (0.7,0.5,0.38,0.28), Blue and Blue-Black DX 0.38, Powertank, Jetstream, Pilot V-Ball, and Signo 207.
betty - 30 Jun 2006, 09:01 am
I always use ballpoints for exams because ballpoints take forever to run out. I like to save my nice gel pens for writing nicer or neater notes.
dragonshark - 01 Jul 2006, 01:01 pm
8) I love Uni-ball Signo .38 any colors and also any kind of Uni-ball Signo from production by other the countries (Japan, Australia, etc) not I never like American Uni-ball production because lousy and boring and plain pens which is not likely Jetpens have these kind of type...

Best Uni-Ball Signo

+Pentel Graphgear series
+Pentel Graph series (although I own 0/2 or 0/3 of the models, but the Graph 1000 rocks)
+Lamy vivo black ballpoint (although I generally dislike chunky pens, this one really caught my eye for its simple look)
+Copic Multiliner SP 0.03
+Copic Sketch markers

-pens with slippery grip
-Papermate Write Bros. (UUUUGLY!)
-the new rotring Tikky (the rubber parts of the grip are strange)
-most of Faber-Castells pens and pencils (boring design and uncomfortable in the case of their drafting pencil TK-Fine
-pens with broad nibs
holgalee - 21 Dec 2008, 11:10 pm
Yeah:
Uniball gel and rollerballs
Pilot hi-techpoint 0.5, 0.7 (the only Pilot I seem to like)
Zebra Sarasa 0.5, 0.7
Lamy Safari fountain pen (EF and F nibs)
Pelikan M150 fountain pen

Nay:
Faber castell needle gel 0.7 (blobs like crazy)
Pilot G2 0.7 (skips and not waterproof)
Platinum Preppy fountain pen (ink doesn't always come out, needs shaking)
Metternich - 22 Dec 2008, 06:19 pm
another pen I highly dislike:

Papermate EraserMate. not smooth or fast writers at all. and newer pens tend to leave drops of oil on the paper. I normally don't like pencils, but I'd rather use one than one of these crappy pens. Also the ink smudges. But it can write upside down, if it's really important to you (but so can pencils!)

Favorite Pens/Pencils:::
- hi-tec-c coleto .3
- Uni ball signo DX .38
- Zebra Sarasa Clip .5
- Pilot Symmetry Ballpoint Pen

Least Favorite Pens/Pencils:::
- Ye old wooden pencils that are all over the ground at school. I hope these die out!
- Bic and PaperMate type stic pens that never seem to work consistently
- Gel pens. They're too inky and thick.
mackemsam - 14 May 2009, 04:38 am
Hit:

Uni-Ball Signo MF3 multi pen (black body, but that's just me  )
Pilot Symmetry ballpoint
Hi-Tech-C Slim Knock (black)
Kuru Toga 0.5mm mechanical pencil (black body)
Uni-Ball Jetstream 4+1 multi pen (go on, guess which body colour! )
0.7mm and 0.5mm Jetstream ballpoints
Uni-Ball Jetsream F* Series 2 (berry stripe body - it's my wife's!)
Faber-Castell Grip 2011 0.7mm mechanical pencil (gunmetal body - doesn't come in black!)

Miss:

Wooden pencils
Bic ballpoints
Paper Mate Phd multi pen (truly awful build quality and far too wide a barrel for comfort)
Parker fountain pens (used to be good, but not lately IMHO)

Favourite fountain pen: Hero 329, though I'm due a Pilot Prera today, so I might have to revise this soon.

Favourite fountain pen inks: Aurora black, Private Reserve Copper Burst, J. Herbin Vert Olive.

Cheers,
Sam
