What's in your pencil case?

holgalee - 16 Dec 2008, 12:48 am
Other than showing what you just got, I thought it'll be cool to have a thread on what's in our pencilcases. These are items you regularly carry around, which are not necessarily what you just bought. :D Do show your pencilcase as well, coz I love pencilcases!
Image

From lef to right: Pencilcase from Muji (with my own machine embroidered leaf), Uni 0.5 3B lead, Uni-ball Signo 0.5, Pilot Hi-techpoint v7, Uni-ball 207F, Zebra Sarasa Clip 0.7, Uni-ball DX fine, Uni-ball Jetstream 1.0 light blue, franken pen (Bic BU2 grip with Uni-ball Laknock 1.0 blue refill) Zebra Sparky-1 highlighter (label removed), Muji pen cum pencil, Lamy Safari in lime green with EF nib, Pilot fountain pen with M nib, Pelikan M150 with EF nib, Pilot Birdie with M nib.
Top left to right: Muji measuring tape, Whiper Mr Plus correction tape, Pentel polymer eraser.
Absent from photo: thumb drive plugged into PC; cool foldable ruler that's gone MIA.

The fountain pens are all due to my recent interest--or rather, craze--for them. I'll likely sew or find a pen case to carry them separately, esp the Lamy Safari and the Pelikan :D

Wow, I love it!
A couple questions:

How is the Uniball Shu? Is it hard or smooth or just right? Does it break easily?
and is it hard to stitch your own pencil case? what materials do you need?

and that eraser, how does it fare?
holgalee - 27 Dec 2008, 10:03 am
Hi ShadowVariable (love the nick!), I'm not exactly very discerning about mechanical pencils and leads, but I'll try to answer your question. The Uni Shu I got is 3B, as you might have noticed. It writes pretty smooth and so far I've not encountered any breaking.

The eraser is a Pentel Polymer...Soft. I don't have the full name as I cut up the eraser coz I didn't need it in its full size, and seem to have lost the other half! It is one of those 'low dust' erasers, and the rubbings are meant to clump together. It works fairly ok I guess, as I didn't really know what to expect, being my first low dust eraser. It does clean well, but has a slightly funky plasticky smell though!

It's fairly easy to machine designs on the pencil case, provided you can open yours up all the way, like the Muji, as the zip runs all the way down both sides of the case! My sewing machine is not computerised, so I had to stitch each line seperately, making sure to leave some thread at the beginning and end of each line so that I could tie the ends together inside the case. (I reckon if you're familiar with using a sewing machine or have a different design, it should be easier!) I also used an iron-on interfacing on the reverse of the leaf design to protect the thread ends.

While not ever having used uni Shu leads I can tell you that 3B is a soft lead being 3 grades softer than HB (HB being comparable to a #2 pencil lead).

The eraser appears to be an old Pentel Hi-Ploymer block eraser. The new ones come with a blue and white cardboard cover. They are an elastomer product. Just about any such eraser will be identical in function. JetPens carries several brands including MONO and the Pentel Ain block eraser. Another name for the material they are made of is plastic.

Yea, the gal can sew. 8)

You have some nice stuff there :D! Here is what is in my pen/pencil case, mostly craft type pens, I kept the souffle pens together so I could get to them easier.

holgalee - 13 Jan 2009, 01:20 am
Thought I replied to your posting but apparently didn't! Cool stuff you have there; your pencil case must be gigantic! :D What are the two pens above the Pilot Petit 1? Yes, trust a pen geek to scrutinise the photo and attempt to name them all.
Nosferatuia - 13 Jan 2009, 12:36 pm
Yeah my pen/pencil case is pretty large, it still has more room left ha ha :D! The pencil above the pilot petit is a Pool Cool Ghost Festival Mechanical pencil (kawaii pencil) and the pen is a Uni-ball Jet Stream RT.

I have the Whiper Mr Plus correction tape also

I love that correction tape.

Wish jetpens had it.

Safe from outside influence maybe, but not from each other. For the most part inexpensive pens are plastic (except the few that have metal pocket clips) and are relatively safe from being scratched up from being jostled together. However fine drafting pencils, even most mechanical pencils have a lot of metal parts, some being entirely made of metal, and when put in such a case/pouch they can get damaged. The metal parts rub, bang and scrape against the plastic parts causing scrapes and dings. Even all metal pencils can get scratched up. That's why now I keep my "Babies" in home-made pencil cases/boxes. They are kept separate from one another and shielded from harm. You don't want to damage a drafting pencil when you spend upwards of $25.00 per pencil!

Great cases and collection, I also like that computer in the background  very cool. Do you know the names of the characters on your cases? They are very cute!
CloverJokes - 23 Jan 2009, 09:23 pm
I call my cases "tofu babies" but, that's just my take on it.
You can find them on websites like these - www.shopkawaii.com though if you have an Asian part of town next to you I suggest looking there for neat stuff, less expensive.
I live in the vicinity of La Puente and Rowland Heights, so I am blessed to go there and be bombarded with Japanese cuteness.

Oh yeah I love shopkawaii.com I havent found a place to get alot of kawaii and Japanese stuff since I moved here. I have found one Japanese store and it is mostly food and what not, still neat though. I thought those looked like little tofu characters, very cute.

Everyone has great Pencil cases! That was cool embroidery on your pencil case Holgalee! I loved the Kogepan on Nosferatuia's and the Hannari Tofu ones Clever Jokes has, are so cute!

Digital Camera! Digital Camera! Digital! I gotta get me a Digital Camera!
Michael - 24 Jan 2009, 07:46 pm
Gunman - Have you looked on ebay for a used camera? One that's maybe a few years old and is no longer used by someone that just got a new one might be had for less than a new one. You don't need a ton of features to get decent pics for reviews and stuff. I got my last d-cam off ebay a few years ago and it was a great deal all combined....got a few cards and extra batteries and rapid charger with it for a good price. It's only a 2mp, which is now pretty ancient, but the price was right at the time, and it's worked well for me these past couple years. I hope to get a better cam before long, but will step up considerably when I do. But, it's a thought....maybe you can find a good deal there. Doesn't hurt to look. Or check on Craigslist in your area. Heck, post an ad in the "wanted" section of your local CL and see if anyone has a camera for real cheap.

I have my eye on a Kodak C913 from just about anywhere for $99.00. eBay has a great deal on one for $125.00 with a bunch of extras!!! Trouble is, NO MONEY! Even if I found one for $25.00 I could not afford it. All our money is going to live on and to our lawyer. Sad, very sad.

Eh, what's a "Craigslist"? That's the second reference I read about it! Inquiring minds want to know... OK, OK! Me and 5 cats want to know!
Nosferatuia - 24 Jan 2009, 08:48 pm
Kogepan and I thank you ha ha ;)
Michael - 24 Jan 2009, 08:56 pm
$100 or under is fine for a good basic camera, and if you can get one, great. Can't help much with the funds matter, but hope you end up with some funds for the camera before long.

Craigslist.....you could read what wikipedia has to say about it, to learn *what it is and where it came from* stuff, but to dig right in, go here:

http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/fl

I think you were in Florida, right? That is the link to the FL locations...click on the one closest to you and start searching. It's basically an online classified type site. Ads are free to list and reply to.....and there is a "wanted" and "free" as well as a "barter/trade" in the stuff for sale section. There's plenty of junk to dig through at times, but some quality stuff and if you're looking for something to buy or sell, it might be a good resource. Afterall....even if you can't *get* a camera through there, maybe you have a few excess items you could sell through CL and come up with the $100 you want for the camera.

Give it a whirl...it's at least interesting.

Thanks, man! I learn something new every day!

Hello all, I am a school student of 12 and I have to draw different kind of drawing for my art class. I want to buy a new pencil case and stationeries. I would like to know that what kind of pencil case should I buy and what would be the necessary items for this? What are the perfect for this work? Can you give me a list of what I put into my pencil case? Thank you.

If I read you correctly then I assume that you want to know what type of pencils, erasers and carry cases to buy do do pencil drawings with. Big question! But I'll give it a shot.

For drawing, if you don't want to use a variety of wooden pencils, which can be costly in the long run, then there are some 'Leadholders" and "Rotating Leadholders" out there that hold leads from 2.0mm to 4.0mm in diameter. These are generally used for sketching and drawing but each size lead will require it's own leadholder and lead sharpener. The best portable sharpeners are the blade type, called lead pointers, similar to regular wooden pencil sharpeners (the small plastic and sometimes metal manual sharpeners) only they only sharpen the lead. Jetpens carries the Pilot Croquis Rotating Leadholders for $3.00 each. If you use a number of different lead grades (they range from 9H, the hardest, to 9B, the softest) then you may want to invest in more than one leadholder of any one size. The advantage to a leadholder over a wooden pencil is multifold: they don't wear down to a nub; they are easily sharpened; one leadholder and a quantify of different grade leads take up a lot less room that a bunch of wooden pencils; the lead can be extended/retracted as needed; they are cheaper to use in the long run and they don't break. You can go on-line and do a search for leadholders as well as mechanical drawing pencils, and sketch pencils to get an idea of what's available. You can also try art supply stores. For very fine detailed work you may also want to invest in a couple of 0.3mm or 0.5mm low cost mechanical drafting pencils. You can buy the same grades of lead for them as you can the larger leadholders.

For erasers I suggest a good vinyl block eraser as well as a gum eraser. For very small erasures I suggest a Mitsubishi E-Knock refillable stick eraser, also sold by JetPens. These have a thin eraser in them which will allow for very small spot erasing.

As far as paper goes, there are a lot of good quality, low cost sketch pads and papers galore. Most art supply stores and many stationary stores will carry sketch pads in a variety of sizes. Unless you are going to do something you want to frame or sell then you don't really need high end acid free papers.

As far as a carry case, well you'll probably only need something to carry the pencils and erasers in, unless you are going to be taking your paper and tools with you to a lot of different places. JetPens carries a number of different pencil/pen cases of the soft variety. Any of them large enough to carry all your pencils, leads and erasers will work.

I know that all of this is rather general, but I am not a sketch artist. I am just trying to give you a general idea of what you may need in order to do some decent artwork.

On the other hand, if you are only going to be doing this for school art class and never pick the stuff back up again, then... buy a few wooden pencils in a soft grade, say 4B or 5B, a small pencil sharpener, a vinyl block eraser, and a cheapie pencil case of some soft variety and a sketch pad from Walmart. JetPens can handle the pencils, eraser and the carry case (but a cheapie case from Walmart will do fine for school. You can also get the vinyl, or plastic, erasers there , too). You can probably pick up the pencils from either a stationary store or art supply store. But what you can't find locally you can buy over the Net.

I hope that this has helped you out. I am sure that there are quite a few others on the forum who are sketch artists who, hopefully, will give you a more concise helping hand. :D

I don't really NEED any of this stuff, since I don't work in an office, I don't write much, and I don't go to school. But meh, I always find a use for it anyway. Doodling is a hobby too!

Mansikka, that's soooo cute!! :D What pens have you got in there?
mansikka - 02 Mar 2009, 11:42 am
I love my pencil case :D

It's currently filled with a lot of Hi-Tec-Cs in various sizes, and a set of Zebra Sarasa Clips. That was all I could fit in (ok, so that alone ended up being almost 30 pens!)
holgalee - 05 Mar 2009, 03:21 am
Got a new Midori pencil case recently. I just couldn't resist the slightly rough linen fabric, plus the camera and key. This is like playing sport the difference! LOL.

Image

Contents: Midori foldable ruler, Lamy & Pilot blue ink cartridges, Pentel Ain Clic eraser, Pentel correction pen, Uni Propus highlighters in yellow & orange, Muji pen cum pencil, Pilot Hi-tec-c Coleto with light blue, purple & green refills, Zebra Sarasa clip 0.5 in pink, Pilot G-2 ex with Pilot Hi-tecpoint v5 refill, Lamy Safari lime XF nib, Pilot Prera white M nib with Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Budo, Pilot Prera soft blue F nib with Pilot Blue cartridge. Nosferatuia, I'm not sure whether it's possible to buy Midori products online as I get almost all my stationery from local B&M shops. But here's the official website: http://www.midori-japan.co.jp/. Perhaps you can email them to find out? Hope that helps a bit.

Not yet! I'm a super slow sewer. LOL. Takes me forever to make something with the hand or machine. Anyway, I'm so delighted with the Midori pencil case, it might take me a while to make new pencil cases! I've got some pencil cases and stuff here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rubylee/page2/.

Nosferatuia, I've not tried selling anything on etsy though I like checking out the stuff there. What about you? If I want to sell anything, I must learn to sew much faster, as it's not worth all the hours I spend squinting at the sewing machine!

Pencil case with all pens inside. I have 25 pens in here and there is room for 5 more easily - without squeezing it. Just keep in mind that my pens/pencils are of 'normal' or 'typical' width and not thick like quarters.

Ok here are mine and my boys':

This is my 8yo's - it's a Hotwheels pencilcase containing a Hotwheels HB wood pencil, a Tri-Grip Faber-Castell 2B wood pencil, a large faber-Castell rubber eraser, a Maped pair of scissors and a Scotch glue stick.

Image

Here's my 6yo's: a Transformers pencilcase containing 2 Hotwheels HB pencils and two Tri-Grip Faber-Castell 2B wood pencils - one with the eraser-cum-pencil cap on it, a very dirty Faber-Castell plastic ruler, a Faber-Castell sharpener and rubber eraser (smaller than his brother's) and Maped Kiddy scissors.

Image

And heres mine! A Kokuyo Capara Mega in beige containing Pilot V-Board Master whiteboard markers in violet, orange, red and black; a Zebra z7, Pilot G2s in pink and purple, a Pliot Color Eno mech. pencil in purple (filled with black lead), A Zebra Sarasa 1.0, a pentel Slicci in Midnight Blue (awesome pen, this) and a Pilot Spotlighter in Violet. In the bottom compartment I store a refill cartridge for my orange marker (which gets used a lot), a box of lead refills (Pilot 0.7) and two Stabilo Boss Mini Monster highlighters.
Image

Inside, with everything in (see how spacious the pencil case is? I love it!

Oh I also carry in it a Maped mini stapler in red and a small tube of L'Occitanne or Origins handcream, and a Toshiba thumbdrive.

Thanks for looking! :D

As for the case, it's an orange Clinique makeup case, which isn't much to look at.
