and feels professional like the alvin draft matic. the problem with the draft matic is that it will only hold 1 lead and still be able to advance that lead. i would also like the hardness indicator to stay put a bit better. something for under $20 would be nice. is there any such thing? it needs to have a good grip and feel well made and hefty. it doesn't matter if it isn't a drafting pencil. i just like the grip on them though. and a cushioned tip is preferred.

Sounds like you're looking for the Pentel Graphgear 1000 Mechanical Pencil.

1. It can hold quite a bit of lead (more than 3) at a time.
2. The hardness indicator is adjusted by slightly unscrewing the tip section, and remains firmly in place after.
3. It costs $15.00 on JetPens.
4. The textured grip with has rubber nodes, and I would say the pencil itself is considerably solid.
5. It has a 4mm lead sleeve that can be retracted while not in use but is fixed once out.
6. Comes in .9mm.

As for the other diameter..I don't have much experience with 1.4mm diameter mechanical pencils..
