JetPics Favorite - Eric Kubli

Another talented artist we discovered through our JetPens network, Eric Kubli is a freelance illustrator and web designer who also makes comics in his free time. Give us a little insight as to how you use our JetPens products in your illustrations.

I use the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. I tend to use it exactly how it's intended to be used. I order a few packs of refill cartridges from JetPens once every couple months. The only part of my process that I can really say anything interesting about is that I tend not to pencil anything - unless I really think it needs it, I tend to just go straight from blank paper to the finished inks. I also use Microns (typically 08, 05 and 005) for hatching, lettering and small details.

JetPics Favorite - Will Meugniot

What a surprising honor it was when we spotted the famous Will Meugniot in our JetPens Facebook group and found out he was one of our customers! Will Meugniot has enjoyed a long career in the entertainment industry as an executive, artist, writer, producer and director. Will’s television work includes producing and directing many animated series including X-Men, The Real Ghostbusters, Jem, Captain Planet, Spydogs, Spider-Man Unlimited and his personal favorite, ExoSquad. In print Meugniot is best known for his co-creation of the DNAgents comic book, but has also contributed to such series as FemForce, Tigra, Howard the Duck, and Solomon Kane as well as briefly ghosting the Spider-Man newspaper strip. He is also noted as a storyboard artist having designed the titles and pilot films for several series, most notably G.I. Joe, Conan the Adventurer, Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters and Jem.

Give us a little insight as to how you use our JetPens products in your illustrations.

I use the Pentel Pocket brush for most of my large figure work. It has a flexible line not unlike an old school red sable water color brush and is durable as well as portable. I’m also a big fan of the Zebra sign pens in the fine and extra fine widths. They have the feel of crowquille pens without the mess and portability issues.

When working out a cover design I’ll usually block out the composition with the Zebra sign pen. Then take it into Photoshop to scale it and do modifications. I use a Brother 11×17 all in one copier to print out a full size copy to trace onto the actual art board using blue pencil. Then comes the inking: Mechanical outlines for buildings and cars are done with a Pigma marker. Organic lines for people, animals, clothing and so on are a combination of Pocket Brush and Sign Pen. Large black areas are done with a Pentel Color Brush or conventional brush with India ink.

Give us a little insight as to how you use our JetPens products in your illustrations.

I’m a big fan of the Pentel Pocket Brush and use it for nearly all of my work… it’s ridiculously convenient in comparison to dipping a brush and I’m still able to get the kind of expressive line that I want. I have several of them in reserve for when the tips degrade but I keep around the old ones to use for filling in large areas of black. I also use Sakura Pigma Microns (03, 05, 08) for smaller detail and some of the stipple/texture that often shows up in my pages.

JetPics Favorite - Dan Berry

We discovered customer Dan Berry as one of our Twitter followers. A browse through his artwork impressed us, and we are happy to feature him on JetPics! He is a senior lecturer at the North Wales School of Art & Design at Glyndwr University, and leads the specialism in graphic novels. He also works as a freelance designer and illustrator. He has written a number of comics including Silky Wilson, Onion Soup and his ongoing webcomic Oxford Clay (oxfordclay.com) He draws compulsively. His website is thingsbydan.co.uk. The following selected drawings make use of the Kuretake #40 High Grade Sable Hair Brush Pens, Sailor Recruit Fountain Pen - Steel Nib - Fine, and Sailor Pocket Brush Pens.

Depending on the job, I generally use either the Kuretake #40, the Sailor Recruit or the Sailor Brush Fountain Pen (either angle - they are both excellent!) I usually refill the cartridges with Platinum Carbon Black Ink and a syringe, which works really well with both the brush and the fountain pens. I've never had a clogging problem with this ink and these pens. It is good to get a nice uniform blackness throughout a drawing, so whether or not I'm changing pen halfway through an illustration, it remains consistent. Being waterproof and relatively quick-drying is a bonus, but I often use a medium Pentel Aquabrush to pick up some ink into a rough wash before it dries.

Teli is a JetPens customer who has been posting some great artwork on our Facebook page. The JetPens team has really enjoyed her drawings, so decided to feature her on our JetPics page!

Background info:
I'm Teli, an accidental artist. I began drawing as a child to compete with my older sister (an “anything you can draw, I can draw better” type of thing) and eventually grew to love it. Art (along with music and writing) kept me sane. Watercolours make me smile and my style fluctuates from whimsical to downright disturbing. You can visit her art site http://nailet.deviantart.com/.

Give us a little insight as to how you use our JetPens products in your illustrations.
I have a few staples which come with me *everywhere*: my Ohto Promecha 0.3mm drawing pencil, which I adore for sketching; my Uni-ball E-knock eraser, which lets me get into small nooks and crannies; and, of course, spare lead. For more involved projects I'll pull out my arsenal which includes Pilot drawing pens for inking, colorful gel pens (for that touch of whimsy I mentioned earlier), and water brushes which are like carrying tiny cups of water in your pocket.

Give us a little insight as to how you use our JetPens products in your illustrations.

I use the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. I use it in kind of a weird way. I don’t use the cartridges at first. I dip it in the ink and only clean it out once every few days. I just throw the cap on it when I’m not using it. Then when the brush starts to lose its shape I get a new one. Then I use the cartridges in the OLD one for when I need to fill in large areas of the page with black. It’s a great system for my uses. I love it!
