In the early 1940s, Patrick J. Frawley acquired a ballpoint pen parts manufacturer that defaulted on its loans and named it Frawley Pen Company. In 1949, the company developed a revolutionary ink that dried instantly and used it in its pen line with the product name "Paper Mate".

In 1995, The Frawley Pen Company was acquired by Gillette. In 2000, Gillette's stationery division was acquired by Newell Rubbermaid.
