Platinum MWB-500RS Transparent Body 2 Color 0.7 mm Ballpoint Multi Pen + 0.5 mm Pencil - Lavender Purple Body - PLATINUM MWB-500RS 82
This product is a very..., August 7, 2012
This product is a very impressive size considering it fits 2 pens and 1 pencil and it's got a nice solid twist mechanism. Unlike the Cross Tech3, there is no notch in between tips to keep everything safely retracted (the Sharbo also lacks this feature). I actually love the clear plastic because it shows you how these kinds of slim twist multi-pens work. The bad part about the plastic is that the screw-on cap over the eraser can crack if it's tightened too much. The other bad part is that over time the ink may write on the inside of the barrel tip (which is visible because of the clear plastic), making it very unattractive.

The ink in these pens is actually quite good considering it's a regular ballpoint ink and not a hybrid ink like Jetstream. It's not super-black, but it does its job well. I would compare it quite favorably to a Zebra ballpoint. I love the 0.7mm tip on ballpoints, great balance between small text and readability. And it's a D1 refill, so you can use other D1 refills like the Zebra gel ones for the Sharbo line. I don't actually use the pencil, and my ideal multi-pen would be this size but just have three ink colors instead of a pencil, but apparently nobody in the world makes such pens, as far as I know. Highly recommend this pen for people who want an excellent multi-pen that's affordable and good-looking.

Of the batch of multi-pens..., August 8, 2011
Of the batch of multi-pens I bought (Acroball 3, Vicuna 2+1, Jetstream3 0.5mm), I was most excited about this one. I loved that it had four colors (including green!) and a spring-loaded clip. When I took it out of the packaging, however, it immediately disappointed me. It was far thicker than I thought it would be--approximately 12mm at the grip--and felt big in addition to looking big.

When I started writing with it, I immediately liked the dark colors it put out. However, the more I used it, the more I saw regular globs every few letters, no matter which color I used. The different plungers already feel as if they're weaker than they used to be (and less satisfying than all the other multi-pens in my batch), and I've only been playing with the pen for a week or two. Also, the clip is fairly wimpy and difficult to manipulate because the clip doesn't open when it's slid down. And it (for the black ink) slides down way too easily. I don't put it in my pocket because the way I put it in could easily make the clip slide down and I would have black scribbles on the inside of my coat pocket.

I feel bad giving this pen such a negative review because it has so much potential. If they fixed the ink to make it less globby (while keeping the rich, dark colors), tightened the whole thing into a thinner, smaller package, and strengthened all the springs (on the clip and the plungers), then this would probably have been my favorite pen. As it stands, however, nearly everything it attempts to do is sub-par compared to other alternatives. I cannot come up with any instance in which I would recommend this pen.

Of the batch of multi-pens..., August 6, 2011
Of the batch of multi-pens I bought (Surari 4C, Vicuna 2+1, Jetstream3 0.5mm), I was least impressed with this one when I took it out of the packaging. It was by far the thickest--approximately 12.5mm at the grip--and looked pretty big. Then I started using it, and now it's my favorite one!

The ink is incredible. I have had smoother and brighter lines with this pen than with the 0.7mm Jetstream line. It almost never globs or skips, not does it put down ink when I just slightly raise the pen off the page to move to my next letter. I have not used any pen with better ink or more perfect flow than this!

The best part about the pen is the clip, which is spring-loaded so you can clip it on big things. (If all you need to do is clip it to your pocket or something, then it's even easier than most clips.) The clip is heavy-duty without being too bulky and doesn't seem to wear down over time. The plungers have strong, satisfying springs on them that also have not weakened with my incessant plunging tic. As for the size, it's actually not a problem the more I use the pen and I have gotten used to it over time. I highly highly recommend this pen.
Uni Jetstream Color Ink Series Ballpoint Pen - 0.5 mm - Red Ink - UNI SXN15805.15

The ink is a relatively light red, so it's not great for correcting stuff or drawing your attention to something you might underline in red. It's more of a fashion color than the traditional red pens. Still, I really liked the clarity of its clean lines and enjoyed the rarely-globby ink.

The pen is somewhat of a mixed bag, but overall I have had positive experiences with the Jetstream Color line. First, I love the relatively thin diameter and the fact that there is no grip. I love the white barrel color and the accurate barrel representation of the ink color. The plunger is springy and satisfying (perhaps my favorite part of the pen itself). One problem I noticed is that if you unscrew the bottom and screw it back on too tight, there might be a lot of tension and cause cracking down the barrel, as there was in my first Jetstream Color. (Just be aware and don't screw it on too tight!)

The ink is a relatively thin black color, and does not provide a lot of boldness or darkness because the 0.5mm line is so thin. Even though it's scratchy, it still globs occasionally, although the globs are never really noticeable unless you look for them. Overall I had very little problems and was extremely satisfied with the clarity of my lines (when I take notes, I often have to write in small text and I don't like my page looking crowded).

The ink is somewhere between blue and black. Some people like this, but I didn't really know what I was getting into and came out unimpressed, unsure of the scenarios in which I might need a blue-black ink. I've noticed that it also tends to glob a little bit, but it's not too noticeable unless you zoom in on the text and read it closely. The 0.5mm tip is a bit "scratchy" but I didn't mind it at all.

The ink provides a nice bright light orange. Being a 0.5mm pen, however, it's almost unreadable unless you focus in on it. Still, this is more a fashion color than a serious note-taker or business instrument, so it adequately met my expectations.

  First multi-pen I bought..., July 31, 2011
First multi-pen I bought and I'm very satisfied!

At first I thought it was a little thick, but after buying more multi-pens, I realize that it's quite thin for the traditional multi-plunger pen (approx 11mm where you hold it). Also, I love the matte texture and the professional look. I'm not a huge fan of grips, so I'm happy that this one doesn't have one.

As for the ink itself, the gel refills do run out quite quickly. Refills are a breeze: just pop the back up and slide it in. I prefer ballpoints to gels, but these are pretty good at laying down dark lines. (Gels just put down ink too freely for my writing style, so I tend to get a lot of streaking as I go from letter to letter because I don't lift the pen off the page that much.)

Anyway, really happy with this purchase. Even though it's relatively costly ($23 when I bought it with four new gel inks), I thought it was a good purchase decision.
