Palomino Blackwing Pencil - Pack of 12 in Black Gift Box - PALOMINO 103087
  I received the Palomino..., November 23, 2013
I received the Palomino Blackwing Gift Box as a gift because I had it in my wish list, and I am glad I did. At first use, what struck me was the smoothness and darkness of the line these pencils produce. I also noted the balance of the pencil with the large eraser. I found it very comfortable to hold and to write with, though after some quick writing it did produce a much thicker line and was in need of sharpening to maintain crisper print. This is in no doubt a product of how soft and dark the lead is. While I found this pencil to be very easy to write with, I do prefer a pencil that lasts longer between sharpening, which of course means I have since added the Blackwing 602 to my wishlist. Though the Blackwing pencils do come at a premium price, I challenge anyone to adequately prove they are not a quality writing tool.

I bought this mechanical pencil for my 4 year old sometime last year. 1.3mm is a perfect lead size for a preschooler to learn with and these pencils are sturdily constructed with a solid mechanism. I recommend it for anyone with pre-school age children.

I bought this mechanical pencil for my 7 year old niece sometime last year. It is a great pencil for a younger school age child to learn on. The mechanism is sturdy and overall the pencil has solid construction. Being .9mm it is not prone to breakage for younger users. I recommend it for anyone with a younger school age child.

I bought this pencil sometime last year for my then 6 year old son. It is a perfect mechanical pencil for a child to start with and being .9mm is not very prone to breakage. The mechanism seems sturdy and overall the pencil is very well constructed and solid. I highly recommend it for younger school age children.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet on many surfaces, but I can tell you it lays down a nice solid line on paper that resists liquid based inks. I tried it on a dry Rite in the Rain sample and it created a perfectly crisp dark line and wrote almost as dark on the sample after wetting with no running from the previous writing. I've found this paper typically works best with pencil or ball point, and definitely not fountain pens or other liquid ink pens. I'd definitely consider keeping one of these in a Bugout Bag or anywhere I may find myself needing to write on a non-conventional surface. It does tend to lay down a broader line on regular paper, but I expected that.

I ordered both the black and white versions of this pencil. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the eraser cover on the black one is a bit loose. Since the white one is flawless, I assume this is just a production fluke. Also, the eraser is a little hard to use with the lead sleeve out due to the softness of the eraser. It sits really close to the end of the pencil. Great pencil for the price though. Can't beat a $2 pencil with a retractable lead sleeve.

It's taking a little getting used to, but this pencil is great. I typically prefer a thinner line with a mechanical pencil, but the ability to just keep writing without having to manually advance lead is nice, especially for something like taking notes. Even though the eraser is not replaceable it seems a decent size and should last a while for normal erasing duty. I'd like to get a few more of these.
