Since 1850, the German company Brause has been manufacturing steel nibs for writing, drawing and decorating. Brause nibs can be found in the toolbox of many calligraphers, artists, penmen and illustrators. The nib is commonly known as the "Blue Pumpkin” because of its blue color and shape.
I very much prefer this nib to the more popular G nib (which i find better for
drawing than writing but that's for another review). I use this nib for my daily
journal entries and it is such a joy to write with! This may be a calligraphy
nib but is by no means hard to use for a beginner. There is excellent control
and line variation. I write a with a cursive hand that is on the smaller side.
If any of you are wondering of the differences between this nib and its smaller
cousin the "Arrow", the Blue Pumpkin is considerably larger and holds much more
ink. I can comfortably write a few lines with the Pumpkin. The Arrow lasts me a
sentence or two and is slightly more temperamental to use imo - a matter of
personal preference really.
This nib is a winner! It holds a fairly large amount of ink for its size, though
if you're flexing the nib, the ink gets eaten up fairly quickly. Which is only
to be expected. :) I would say that the line it puts down when not flexed is
extra-fine, but I suppose that all depends on perspective. It's also a very
smooth writer, and has great control. This is my current favorite nib for
writing (when I'm not using a fountain pen, of course)!
If ya gotta dip,.....dip with this! The Blue Pumpkin has a lot of flex,...so a
variable width line is a breeze. It does like the ink though,...so "adippin" you
will do!
When i first got this pen nib i was dissapointed of the point width, but when i
tested it, my opinion changed completely, it is really good, allows to change
line width or do stable lines, holds a good amount of ink and also has a cool
looks, it is my second favourite pen nib, next to the G pen.
