Kiss your paper with lush ink colors created by the French. Each 30 ml bottle has a unique rectangular shape with a groove on top that doubles as a pen rest. These bottles are known as "D" bottles, which refers to the old French unit of measure "la Demi Courtine."
Herbin was established in 1670 and is the oldest name in formal ink production in the world. It has supplied ink to renowned figures in French history, including Louis XIV, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Victor Hugo of Les Misérables. Jacques Herbin created this line, "La Perle des Encres," or "The Jewel of Inks," in his shop on the Rue des Fosses Saint-Germain in Paris in 1700.

I am usually not a person...January 9, 2012Verified PurchaseI am usually not a person who reaches for brown, but I have felt for a really long time now that it'd be nice to have a sepia in case I ever feel like it. After a long internal battle of to buy or not to buy, I decided heck, it must be worth SOMETHING. I guess I was expecting a little too much out of this color.
This is a very plain brown. It looks very much like the swab on the chart, perhaps a bit lighter. The shading isn't as great as J. Herbin's Vert Olive or Bleu Pervenche, since it's a dry ink. When it dries, it has a sort of waxy look to it, sort of like the way Zebra Sarasa Clips write, probably because it's a dry ink. Even though I complain that the color disappointed me, this ink doesn't go untouched. I still reach for this color every now and then. It's nice when I'm not feeling up to vibrant colors. I feel like a creamy paper would look nicer with this ink than regular white paper.
The thing that really breaks my heart is that this ink is not meant for the Lamy Safari. Did I mention this is a dry ink? Yeah, the ink dries in the Safari if I don't use it everyday. Even if I do use it everyday, it takes a while to start up. I neglected the Safari for a week and found a layer of "pudding" under the nib. Sure, it was easy to clean, but it's still saddening.
I currently have the Cafe des Iles in a Lamy Safari and a Pilot Petit1 and have been using it for roughly 3 months. The color wasn't what I expected and it's so dry it makes my eyes water. This ink just isn't for me.5 people found this helpfulMinhAnhonymous -
This is a really great...February 14, 2012This is a really great ink, one of my favourite colours in the Herbin series. It has a lovely warm coffee colour. Unlike the other reviewer's experience, it has behaved beautifully in my Lamy Al-Star. It's a very smooth flowing ink for me.4 people found this helpfulganga.jayaram

the color of this ink...August 23, 2012Verified Purchasethe color of this ink is just amazing. however i am very disappointed because i cant use this ink with any of my fountain pens. it dries up on the pen too quickly, after a minute of writing notes, its skips and won't write anymore unless u wipe the nib or dip it in ink. I tought the problem was on the pen, until ive tried this ink on all of my fountain pens. it just wont work. Im so disappointed because ive bought the whole 30ml bottle of this unusable ink :( ..it might work in medium nibbed pens but I prefer fine or extra fine and this ink is not for that. I plan on reselling or returning this ink ive barely used3 people found this helpfulrozen_hino_21
