I tried this first pen...February 21, 2020Verified PurchaseI tried this first pen from Kaweco, initially, because I hadn't yet utilized a Broad nib fountain pen. It seemed that in order to be able to answer the question of whether I preferred Broad or Fine nibs, I would need to at least try a B out (I had tried nibs from EF to M, prior). I was also attracted by the fact that I could swap out nibs and keep the body, if I wanted to.
What surprised me at first was the amount of ink this pen lays down. What has continued to surprise me is the fact that -- I'm using the Mini Converter -- the ink doesn't seem to want to evaporate out of this pen as easily as it has in many of my other pens (particularly the Pilots, and the LAMY AL, while I had it).
I'm not sure if the lack of evaporation here is because of the ink I'm using (Noodler's "Black Swan in Australian Roses"), or if it's because the cap screws on so firmly to the pen itself that it deters evaporation -- or if the feed is just holding onto a ton of ink (my writing was noticeably darker just after the first filling). In any case, I'm not wasting a lot of ink. I'm used to ink evaporating out of the converter and concentrating down, and if anything, that tendency is reversed with this pen/ink combination.
I've also found that I like Broad, Medium, and Flex nibs for regular English writing (over Fine or Extra Fine), while Extra Fine nibs are great for practicing my writing in Japanese language. This is even though the letterforms require extra space in order to avoid crowding on the page (I have to double-space or 1.5-space my writing, when using a 6mm dot grid). It would also seem that the heavier lines and heavier ink flows make it more likely that the writing will soak through to the back of the page (depending on the absorbency of the paper).
There's shading that you get (with at least some inks), which seems disguised to a degree in a Fine or Extra Fine nib, but which shows up really nicely with a M, B, Flex, or Stub nib. I'm a fan of shading. I don't know how common that is...
I'm including this because the Kaweco Sport was the pen that actually showed me what it was like to write with a bold line -- and I found out that, at least at this time, I prefer it. Because it's relatively inexpensive (for a Kaweco), it's also good for just trying things out. If you find you don't like a Broad nib, it looks like you can also swap out that nib for a different one, and still be able to use the pen.
I'll still keep my finer-tipped pens, but there's something about the character of this one that attracts me. And yes, I am considering getting a more expensive Kaweco in the future, thanks. :)6 people found this helpfulKaede -
This pen is the perfect...August 12, 2023Verified PurchaseThis pen is the perfect pen for me. Love the milky pink plastic. So, people with large hands will most likely find this pen uncomfortable. The broad nib shows off shading and sheen and is so smooth. I keep looking for excuses to write more with it.1 person found this helpfulfsofield
