Positive- Good packaging, and the paints don't rattle or slide about. The pallet has plenty of separate mix spaces. The pen is waterproof if left overnight; I am unsure of the dry time. The water brush is soft enough for weak hands to squeak. It has a good selection of bright colours and has a few unique choices, such as peach and grey. No chalk-like residue, very forgiving when it comes to colour lift. It would be great for large flower spreads or galaxy and cloud mixes.
Negatives- the colours are EXTREMELY water reactive. They melt when you put the brush in. Flooding is a big issue; considering water control, I would never recommend it for beginners. While it could be used as watercolour or gouache, it doesn't act like it. When in thick consistencies, it can become tacky, it dies with a sheen, and the colours can reactivate again if not careful. The almost empty pans look very unattractive. I pressed the colour, and they were, in fact, half full. I didn't mind because this was an attempt at the brand thing. The issue is that a water brush is entirely unsuitable for this type of paint; the brush constantly flowed when bent on paper, and the refill took 5 times. It was spitting back air and water. That black thing inside the brush didn't come off. I get what they were going for, but it's not good. It's less messy just to put it under the tap, and some brands do half-size brushes with way better stoppers. I would never risk going outside with them, air moisture is a thing, if they are hard on room conditions, they will be impossible in rainy conditions. They need 100% Cotton paper for good results; they didn't take well to standard notebooks and could be lifted entirely days after from some papers. Some of the results were decent but not particularly miraculous. They performed very similar to other brands of watercolours but were more forgiving of mistakes.
Conclusion—If you are a beginner, buy a local good brand of watercolour or gouache. They are hard to truly mess up. Buy a proper pan of Gansai if you want to try the paint, not this kit. This is very much a speciality paint with a steep learning curve. All English artists I have seen say they haven't mastered it. I don't believe making this your main will work. They are still good quality paint, but not worth the trouble.

Coming from a traditional watercolor background, I'm working to feel comfortable with my Gansai Tambi. This small palette lets me take the colors in a small package in my purse for moments of practice here and there. The colors are lovely. I know they will be a completely new way of expressing color as my skills develop. Great colors. Lovely to work with.

This palette is pocket-sized and very convenient to carry around. The water brush took a while for me to figure out but once i did, I was painting like crazy! Hopefully refills are in stock for quite a while because I absolutely love using these colors.
