DescriptionSpecificationsQuestions & Answers
Made in Japan, this simple notebook was designed to create a writing experience that you will enjoy. The high-quality Midori Diary (MD) paper inside was developed in 1960 and has been continuously improved on ever since. Midori has conducted many tests using a variety of writing instruments to inspect the paper quality, including observing whether the ink feathers or bleeds, how it dries, how well the pen tips glide across the surface, how the paper feels to the touch, and so on. As a result, the paper is bleed-resistant, feather-resistant, and fountain-pen friendly, giving the user a pleasant writing experience. The grid ruling on the paper features open squares, with markings along the top and side margins to help count the squares.

The notebook has a sturdy thread binding that lies flat when open, making it easy to write on the unique pale blue grid printed on the pages. It also comes with a ribbon marker to keep your place. The cover is not a typical notebook cover. To feature the charm of the paper itself, the cloth tape used to bind the spine, usually hidden by a cover, is exposed, giving the notebook a unique look. You can even see where the ribbon marker is glued in place. The notebook also comes with sticker labels that can be used to label the notebook.

Notebook covers for protecting your notebook are available separately.

Note: this notebook is the same as the Midori MD Notebook with model number 15003006, except for the paper band design.

This is the A5 Grid notebook. Photos of writing feature the 4" x 6" Lined notebook.

This product is a recipient of the 2008 Good Design Award.

I love this notebook...

I love this notebook with fountain pens. It really showcases whatever ink I'm using and (depending on the nib size) I get beautiful shading in my lines. I get so distracted taking notes in this notebook, because I inevitably start writing the same words or phrases over and over just to practice my handwriting because this paper makes it look so good!

Fountain pen ink does take a little while to dry, though, so I do smudge a lot in this notebook if I'm not careful.

I bought this notebook...

I bought this notebook primarily because of the form factor (having a regular notebook style is critical in my work space) and the graph paper. I am an design engineer and having graph paper is beyond critical (on both sides, other notebooks have blank paper on the back side which is not acceptable). Some of the critiques I found for this notebook say that the bleed through using a fountain pen is somewhat significant. I find it hard to understand how reviewers come to that conclusion. I've used two fountain pens, the Pilot Metropolitan and Petit, using Kon-Peki and Chiku-Rin ink, respectively, to write on the pages. There is barely any bleed through on the backside. Both inks show up very well and the pages are smooth, but not ultra smooth, very similar to engineering graph paper that you can find by the ream at any university book store.

I love the elegeant, small bookmark string attached to the binding. The binding itself is very well done, and the spartan nature of the decorations on the cover is appreciated. There is a small embossing on the front cover for "MD Paper" and "Made in Japan." The notebook comes with some stickers: IDEA, DIARY, <BLANK>, and a big tile block with VOLUME, START, FINISH, and FROM THE LIBRARY OF. Technically I think the title block is meant for the front cover, but I dislike clutter on the cover and opted for the first inside page before the graph paper begins. The type font on the stickers is very similar to capital letters you would find on a old type writer.

This notebook is for anyone that needs graph paper in a notebook form that is not going to occupy a large amount of space on their desk. I will be ordering more of these in the future for home and work.

I love these notebooks--I use them for a bullet journal and go through about three or four a year. In them, I use black Staedtler fineliners and the occasional black Sharpie pen.
Like the fountain pen users, I find that my Staedtlers take a few seconds to dry--though my Sharpie pens don't. Also, the few ballpoint pens that I have (the Pilot Dr. Grip and the Uni Jetstream) can get, in the absence of a more technical term, clumpy or glob on the paper; neither pen does this on an average, rougher store-brand notebook paper.
I can live with both the occasional smear and not using a ballpoint because these notebooks are just so darn pleasing to write on otherwise, to look at, and to hold in hand. The cream paper with the light blue grid is gorgeous (and the grid kind of falls away behind what is written on the page) and the cover and exposed tape spine are very pleasing to my low-key aesthetic preferences. Photos just don't do this notebook justice or pick up the wonderful textures of it. And the fact that it opens completely flat cinches the deal.

If you use fountain pens, this is a must-try! I love the smooth finish. The grids are the perfect size. The cover is, well, just fun to be creative with (can't wait to get the plastic cover I just saw for it!). There is zero bleedthrough or feathering. I tried this with a medium and a fine nib. I found that it works best with a medium nib. I absolutely need more of these, they're affordable and I love the quality!

I've gone through many different notebooks and brands over the years. Right now my favorite type of rule is lined grid and these are my absolute favorite lined grid notebook. The price point is perfect for buying multiple notebooks to use (and as an author, I prefer a book per novel). I use fountain pens, gel pens, and even watercolor without too much trouble. It's less resistant than Tomoe River paper to the watercolors, but it's also a quarter of the price of TR paper, hahaha. The cardstock covers are less resistant to everyday use than something hardback or softcover, so if you're like me and carry them everywhere you'll go, a cover would be a best bet. Jetpens thankfully stocks many varieties of A5 covers.
